We have been expats in Trinidad for two years and are kicking ourselves that we didn’t visit this great hotel until just a few weeks ago! After braving the main highway from Port of Spain to Arima followed by a secondary road to Valencia, and then snaking our way along the beautiful, rugged, winding coastline of north-eastern Trinidad to the sleepy town of Grande Riviere, we arrived at our destination a mere 3 ½ hours later. 2 adults, an adventurous 7 year old boy and a trepid, pre-teen girl walked across the graveled car park into the open-air lobby of Mt. Plaisir with the intention of seeing leatherback turtles and more importantly, with the intention of avoiding another 3 day holiday weekend in front of the TV. Boy, did this place fit the bill! Smiling Lydia greeted us and we were advised that our room was almost ready and that she would fetch us when it was. We walked past the small restaurant right onto the beach beneath a huge banyan tree and noticed some makeshift swings that the kids immediately took advantage of. A local artisan was displaying her wind-chimes and of course, we had to buy one. Shortly thereafter, we were shown to our room for four in the newly added space above what used to be the stables. Room 15 was great: up-stairs, on the end, air conditioned, spotless, king bed with mosquito drapes, fold out sleeper for 2 + one. Our spacious balcony was outfitted with comfortable deck chairs and small tables. My husband and I sat down, enjoyed a bottle of wine and watched our kids romp around on the beach below. Dinner was delicious with fresh, local ingredients. All of the tables were beautifully decorated with flowers and leaves. Then it was turtle time. We spent a good hour on the moonlit beach right outside the hotel restaurant sneaking up on leatherback turtles laying their eggs, under the watchful eye of a local and experienced guide, of course. Early the next morning, we were out on the beach again to watch the last few straggler turtles do their work. The kids shooed away buzzards and dogs to rescue several hatchlings which were put into special buckets for release that night under the relative protection of darkness. Where else in the world can a couple of kids participate in turtle rescue? The hotel restaurant’s home-made bread made for a delicious breakfast. At lunch we feasted on piping hot, veggie-laden Italian pizza from the wood fired oven. We kept joking, wait … where are we? In the middle of no-where at the end of the road on a tropical island. And we’re eating pizza baked in a wood-fired oven!? Well, Piero, the owner is Italian. Enough said.
We enjoyed our stay so much that we returned the next weekend with friends in tow. Our party of 12 was treated with the same warmth and laid-back attitude as before. The adults spent a lot of time on the upstairs balcony and the kids enjoyed the beach, the water and the turtles. Our friends were so glad they came.
Mt. Plaisir Estate Hotel is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the beauty of northeastern Trinidad, whether or not the turtles are nesting. You feel like you have fallen off the grid, except of course, cell phones do work and there is WiFi to be found in the restaurant. We’ll be back!
