Let me begin by saying that I am embarrassed that it has taken me over a month to write this review of Seaclusion Suites. I have been very busy at work and with moving so I haven’t had the opportunity ….
I came across an article in Gourmet or Bon Apetit magazine a couple of years ago and showed it to Michael who agreed that we should try it out. I have traveled to Anguilla almost 20 years in a row and have seen it go from primitive to tabloid. I wanted a new, quiet retreat. So we booked our flights (very convenient from JFK) and chose Seaclusion Suites as our home away from home.
If you don’t have enough time to read everything I have written…. Let me summarize. We LOVED Seaclusion Suites and Carriacou. We LOVE Bob and Marie. WE WILL BE BACK (annually, I hope). In fact, while I have not had time to write for Trip Advisor, I have had time to check for flights to Grenada at least ten times.
I want to take you through our visit and tell you all of the pluses (and minuses, though there are few) and welcome you to write me and inquire about anything you read or have read elsewhere.
We arrived on the early ferry from Grenada. The taxi, as promised, was there to pick us up and another couple that was staying in the second suite. The taxi fare is charged to you, but it is very reasonable (30 EC, I think) and how else do you plan to get to your hotel? If you want to do some shopping in town, arrange this with Bob and Marie before you arrive. They can arrange for a taxi to take you to do some shopping in town on the way for approximately 10 EC ($3). I recommend that you know what you are looking for before you go to do your shopping – as a third world country, shopping in Carriacou is not like shopping in the US. There is no “Supermarket” – there is a fruit and vegetable stand, fish market, dry goods shop, etc. There is also a great little bakery, Henriettas, on the way to Seaclusion Suites. I loved the shopping… but you may find it burdensome, which is OK because Marie cooks WONDERFUL meals, but I will come back to that point.
It was a relatively short (approx 20 minute) ride to Seaclusion Suites. As you get away from town, the roads get quite rocky and so I recommend you don’t rent a car and instead let the taxis do the carting around for you. In fact, sometimes when it rains a lot the roads are so bad that the taxi cannot make it down to Seaclusion Suites – this happened to us but we just looked at each other, shrugged, and walked along down the hill. To be honest, I don’t really see why you would want to venture too far from Seaclusion Suites but maybe once or twice to try or do something different. Again, I will come back to this point.
Bob and Marie welcomed us on the front lawn and introduced us to their hideaway. It was a quite longwinded welcome but I think that Bob was trying to fill time and entertain while the suites were being cleaned (someone checked out that morning, and remember we arrived early). Marie offered lunch but we declined and instead took a walk over the hills to Paradise Beach where we ate at the Hardwood Bar. The food there is OK, but the scene is fun, so you should go for a rum punch and French fries (if they have them). I don’t recommend eating anywhere else on Paradise Beach because you don’t know how long the food has been in the kitchen… most places aren’t very busy.
Bob and Marie welcomed to our suite, the honeymoon suite, which was beautiful and the perfect size and set up for a romantic week in Paradise. There is not a lot of place to store your luggage or what you brought… but if you are smart, you won’t bring a lot. I felt very strange with our large Brics and Tumi suitcases (honestly, the largest size each company makes). There is nowhere and no way you can use all of the things you think you might bring, so don’t bother. Seriously! I guess there are two noteworthy things about the suites that are worth mentioning – 1) Bob and Marie do try to conserve electricity and water (I don’t know why some reviews make this out to be a bad thing…. But maybe I am predisposed to environmental conservation) and 2) There is no hot water and the water is quite chilly. The lack of hot water was a real problem for Michael at first and he got very upset with me, but then he started boiling some water first, and everything was back to normal and wonderful.
The rooms are comfortable and very quiet and very dark at night. We slept 10-12 hours each night and returned to the States looking well rested,10 years younger and healthier. Afterall, isn't this what vacations are all about?!
Our suite had a beautiful deck overlooking the beach and sandy island (? I think that is what it was called). Marie will move your dining table on the deck so you can have your meals out there. We had breakfast out there every morning and dinner some evenings also.
So this brings me back to Marie’s cooking. We LOVED it. I have to admit, I was skeptical based on the reviews I read. I never really trust other’s opinions – like who knows where they like to eat at homeand what they consider good? Well, let me give you some clarifying points… We have traveled and enjoyed some of the best cuisine in the world, most notably traveling on a culinary tour of the South of France eating in Michelin starred restaurants 9 nights in a row, and we went to Per Se for Christmas this year. So, I know what I am talking about when it comes to food. Marie’s cooking is delicious. Refreshing. Different. And I LOVED it. We had fresh caught fish every night we ate with her. It was always wonderful. She makes a great salad. And she serves three or four sides each night. We kept requesting the same ones….. I made her give me her sweet plantains recipe the final night of our stay because I had been devouring them all week. …. She also brought tablecloths, nice napkins, lanterns, and incense that really made for a wonderful experience. And she was sooo helpful with photos and multiple takes!
Now the other restaurants on the island? Bogles Round House is good, but not consistent. The first night we went it was GREAT and the second night was OK, and there was glass in our intermezzo…. So I might not recommend it. If you do go, the curry lobster is good. We also went to the Green Roof Inn, scarfed down two entrees (not because they were good, but because the place was SO unpleasant) and called our taxi to come an hour early. We should’ve left before we ordered. I honestly recommend eating at Seaclusion Suites most nights… the food is far superior and the prices are more reasonable than in town.
So you must think that I drank the kool-aid, and I did…. And all of this with 4/7 days of rain! We fell in love with Seaclusion Suites, and Bob and Marie, and we will be back.
