“Pure Charm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2011

We knew we would love Bequia when we arrived at the small airport via an "island hop" from Barbados and there was only a single customs agent waiting for us. No long line to get through customs...no hordes of arriving tourists. And we were not disappointed. It was a wonderful four days at the Firefly Plantation from beginning to end. Of course, it didn't hurt that we left the Firefly in Bequia to arrive at the Firefly in Mustique...but that's another review. I'll write it next. Stan, the owner, arranged the inter-island transportation and that was a part of the charm.
The Firefly Plantation is one of the most relaxing and beautiful places we have ever visited.
It's VERY small...only four rooms and a guest cottage. And that makes the service you receive very personal. Rodney, Donovan, and Ernie (his brother manages the Firefly in Mustique) are all very genuinely nice people. We really enjoyed our conversations having a drink at the bar or over dinner. The food was quite good by the way, rivaling places we've stayed with 5-star ratings. But I guess what I'm trying to say is that we were treated more like "new friends" than just another face in an endless line of tourists. And we've traveled enough the last four or five years to know the difference. It is the polar opposite of the phony all-inclusive francise resorts just about everywhere else. Admittedly, we really dislike those places.
If you want to spend some time actually getting to know real people who live on one of the prettiest little islands in the Grenadines, then this is your place. Everyone basically knows everyone else. There doesn't appear to be anything remotely resembling a crime problem.
There are no places "you shouldn't visit". You won't be hassled on the beach or in town...at least we weren't even a single time. You can just relax and enjoy yourself...which for us is what it's all about.
In short, we just absolutely loved the place and the people we met. The extra money we spent getting from Barbados to Bequia was worth every single penny twice over. And only having been back home now for a couple of days, we're already starting to plan our return trip.
I only have one warning. If you are not physically fit, this may not be your place. There are a lot of steps you have to constantly climb and descend at the Firefly...the same if you visit Jack's Bar at the beach. Even if you are physically fit, the climb up to the road from Jack's will have you grabbing your knees and breathing hard at the top. 77 very steep steps...we counted!
Assuming you're in decent shape, my advice is pretty straightforward...get there and see it for yourself before they put the bigger airport on St. Vincent. When that happens, hordes of tourists will start arriving by ferry and the charm of the place will disappear. And while you're at it...combining it with a stay at the Firefly Mustique (VERY different type of place) is well worth it.

Room Tip: All four rooms are the same. Get one on the first floor if you plan on doing some serious drinking a...

“Unfailingly excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 April 2011

Everything is taken care of by the excellent and friendly staff starting at the airport where John the taxi driver met us. John drives the "Hotta Fire" taxi anywhere you want to go at any time you want to go there. He is a very kind and friendly man who seems to know everybody on the island. He picked us up after a long and tiring trip and delivered us to the bar and our backs to the room.

At the open air bar we met Donovan the manager over a complimentary drink while he explained the resort. Donovan made us feel welcome and at home from the beginning and always went out of his way to help us with the needs of the day starting with breakfast.

We chose the island for the scuba diving and had to leave the resort a bit earlier than normal breakfast hours each day. Donovan went out of his way to accommodate our schedule and always had a little chat for us as well. Breakfast at the resort is best accomplished with the dogs and cats stretched out at your feet while you enjoy the fabulous fresh fruits and ,of course, the view from the restaurant

I might add that the moon displayed one of it's historically large size while were there and the view of the very large moon over the ocean against the backdrop of the tree fogs was truly magical.

As an aside, the Dive Bequia shop is very well run with good equipment and friendly, experienced staff. We split our lunches evenly between trips back to the resort for lunch or trips over the Princess Maragaret Beach or Lower Bay beach for lunch. There is no shortage of nice beach bars.

In the evenings when we returned the room was always immaculate. The staff does a great job of keeping the place spotless while preserving the feel that it's yours. Drinks at the bar generally precede supper the bartenders Ernie and Rodney do good job and kept us entertained with stories and friendly banter.

Supers are superb. The cook, Max, is gifted and makes outstanding meals in just the right quantity while keeping them healthy. He uses fresh ingredients from the sea or from the plantation and surrounding area. The wine list compliments the food.

We had a bit of an airline snafu on the last day and received excellent advice and assistance from the staff to help us work through that.

I would recommend this place to anybody. I guess the best recommendation is that we'd go back there tomorrow if we could. So thanks to all the staff for an excellent stay and especially to Donovan for being the unfailingly competent and friendly manager of a fine place

“The Firefly - A True Caribbean Experience!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 April 2011

Day 1 of our honeymoon on Bequia, sweet sweet – we wanted a trip that wasn’t your typical all-inclusive tall-wall tourist-trapping type affair – our favorite part of traveling is immersing ourselves in an experience completely different from our everyday lives in the States – the Grenadines were the perfect pick! Off the beaten path, south of the Hurricane belt, and full of true West Indian culture. Bequia stole our hearts and left us yearning for more!!

The Firefly resort is the perfect blend of premium luxury and natural beauty - the bar/restaurant and rooms are made completely of stone, rock and dark wood - unlike an eyesore that compromises of so many tropical destinations, the Firefly blends right into the surrounding hillside, but does so without any sacrifice in comfort or accommodation. The rooms are large and open, with wide sliding doors to let in the refreshing breeze and jaw-dropping view of the plantation and ocean. The beds are sublimely comfortable, shower is stone-walled and spacious, and opens up to the large balcony and terrace which allow you to soak it all in! The limited number of rooms and impeccable, polite, responsive staff truly made my wife and I feel like we were the only guests on the grounds. Rodney and Donovan were there to welcome us from the moment we stepped out of the taxi, and never stopped tending to our every need until John the cab driver took us away at the end of our stay! They provided us with a level of personal care that I have never experienced before in all my travels. From the delicious meals, served in our rooms, on our balconies, or in the beautiful, open restaurant which overlooked the pool, grounds and ocean; to Keith’s informative plantation tour which displayed the delicious fruits and spices that were featured in all the meals; to the lively reggae music playing while the lively conversation grew at the bar – our time at the Firefly was absolutely first-class from top to bottom.

We spent most of our days tucked away at the Firefly - resting on the plush, cool, king-sized beds beneath the soft, inviting sheets, eating delicious, simple Caribbean-American fusion cuisine served in our room (the conch soup and chocolate mousse were easily the highlights), and soaking up the sun by the quiet, discreet pool - honestly, the surroundings gave us no reason to leave! We are on the secluded eastern shore of Bequia, nestled inside the grounds of a 30-acre, 18th-century plantation which now actively grows all types of herbs, fruits and vegetables. We are here in late July, at the beginning of the wet season, so the surrounding hillsides are dense and green and the plantation grounds are bursting with lush flora of all colors – the only sounds are the birds chirping overhead, the breeze blowing through the swaying palms, and the Atlantic running ashore in the distance. Dragonflies dance above the still pool water, butterflies flutter through the deep green bushes that envelop us – the pool is a solace for all our senses – the sun warms, the water refreshes, the quiet soothes, the privacy nurtures - with our view from the second-floor Coconut Room stretching all the way to the Atlantic, we are tuly in an idyllic Caribbean Paradise!

We spent seven magnificent days with Rodney, Donovan and his team at the Firefly on Bequia, then left for a 3-day sailing trip to visit the other Grenadine islands. Without getting into too many details (saved for another not-so-positive review of a certain sailing charter company that shall at this point remain nameless) our sailing trip was a rude awakening from the first-class service and comfort we enjoyed at the Firefly. Our first island stop was Mustique, and my wife simply would not return to the sailboat once we arrived. Not sure what to do to salvage our honeymoon, I was greeted by a sign that at first I thought was an oasis – a welcome sign for the Firefly Mustique at the foot of the dock! I quickly ran over to Basil’s, used the phone, told the gracious hosts at the Firefly our situation, and in less than an hour they had a golf cart ready to pick up my wife and deposit her in an open room while I gathered my things! I managed to email Stan, the manager of the Firefly resorts – he was most gracious in extending us accommodations at his facility on Mustique, because we truly could not have imagined spending the last few days of our honeymoon anywhere else than in the confines of the incredible Firefly resorts.

In (not so) short – the Firefly resorts on Bequia and Mustique are without comparison the most comfortable, consistent, conscientious, classy, courteous and cush you will ever enjoy – their entire staff on both facilities are absolutely top-shelf in their service, professionalism, and warmth. The food is impeccable, rooms are immaculate and accommodating, and the vibe on either island is what a true Caribbean experience is made of. My deepest thanks go out to Rodney, Donovan, Stan, and their entire team! You made our honeymoon truly once-in-a-lifetime! We hope to return to the Grenadines, and the Firefly, very soon!!!

Room Tip: The Coconut Room, upper left corner, hands down!!

My partner and I enjoyed a long weekend at the Firefly Bequia, after weeks of work with no days off it was bliss to chill out at the Firefly...relaxing by the pool, strolling through the gardens, meeting interesting people and enjoying the luxury and comfort of a lovely hotel. We definately want to return to explore more of Bequia, the Firefly is a perfect place to stay. The views are wonderful and the location secluded. Liz and Stan have done a wonderful job of creating an oasis....of beauty and calm ....
