Owner Lisa Hunnicutt has created a marvelous oasis in this hillside accommodation. Situated uphill (and I do mean hill) from Port Elizabeth, this inn is comprised of her own residence and two additional suites. I stayed in the upper level Passion Fruit Suite, which included living room, full kitchen, bedroom, and large bathroom. A large, covered veranda ran the full width of the suite, and it was the idea place for breakfast or an evening sunset watch, as Aqua commands a wonderful view of Admiralty Bay. French doors in both the living room and bedroom bring the spectacular view indoors. Furnishings were lovely -- not the typical plastic variety usually found in casual, Caribbean inns -- and I was particularly impressed with the stunningly comfortable, king size bed. Ceiling fans and mosquito netting contributed to comfortable sleeping, even without air conditioning. (Some readers might wish to know that the downstairs suite does have a/c available.)
Aqua is loaded with small details that I appreciated, like quality sheets and towels; generous closet space with plenty of hangers; a well-equipped kitchen including a complimentary bottle of wine, tea bags, coffee and filters; a utility sink and clothesline on the huge, enclosed back patio; and even a bottle opener mounted on the front porch, which really came in handy for the post-dive beers I enjoyed every afternoon. Best of all, there was a perfectly situated plunge pool, located mere steps from my bedroom, that enjoyed the same commanding bay view as the rest of my accommodation.
Lisa has also opened a gym on the property's ground floor, with a pretty decent selection of workout equipment. I never used the facility, but I did enjoy visiting with some of the island residents who dropped by for a workout.
Aqua is within walking distance of the Belmont Walkway and Port Elizabeth, although my companion and I decided to rent a vehicle after one day of hiking back up the hills after diving. The younger or more energetic could get by without wheels, but then you'd miss the chance to explore the further reaches of this terrific little island.
Dog lovers will be delighted with the two resident canines at Aqua; within a day of arrival, Razz and Saffron had become my "new best friends."
Given Bequia's small size, everything is within an easy drive of Aqua, but it is especially convenient to the dive shops, restaurants, and other services lining Admiralty Bay. I loved the relaxed, friendly atmosphere and comfortable surroundings, and I thought Aqua was a great value. When I return to Bequia, I will definitely stay here again.
