“loved this place and very spacious”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

We spent 5 nights at De Reef Apartments on Lower Bay in Bequia. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous. I wanted to reserve a 1 bdrm but there are only 2 1 bdrm units and they were taken, apparently the same ppl get them this time of year every year. We ended up getting the 2 bdrm for only $118 per night that included all taxes. It is a great deal. I don't know what room number it is but it was upstairs had the 2 bdrms, one king in one and 2 twins in the other, 2 bathrooms, large kitchen, dining and tv area. There was a great balcony that you could also access from the master bdrm.

The kitchen had everything you needed and everything worked. They even had electrical adapters that you could use. We bring an adapter with us that has different prongs for whatever country u need and a power strip to plug in multiple things.

The sleeping was great and very quiet.

You will literally be at lower bay beach in under 2 minutes by walking down the driveway and across the street. They also had chairs that they let us use, you will have to ask. Or there is a man on the beach that rents chairs for i think it was only $3 a day next to Bee's Cafe.

I walked down to Bee's Cafe almost every morning and bought some coconut bread to go with breakfast up in the room it was great. She also sells tea, coffee other baked goods, yogurt (very small) and some meat patties.

We would not hesitate to stay here again.

Great location, nice owners, very close to beach and bars. De reef restaurant is also very nice to eat and drink. Right on the beach
Be prepared to walk of pay substantial amount for a short taxi ride to town.

“We must return!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2011

De Reef is the sort of place which you want to tell everyone about, but don't want to in case it becomes too popular!
We had a one bedroom apartment which was massive - the bedroom had two double beds, cable TV, A/C, ceiling fan if you didn't need air conditioning, mosquito nets. We didn't bother with the nets - used two (because the place was so huge) electric repellents instead. There was a large dining/sitting area with fully equipped kitchen - gas oven, microwave, kettle, toaster etc. Outside was a large porch with table and chairs which made a nice place to eat, or to sit in the evening with a rum punch. The apartment was probably the biggest and best equipped that we've ever stayed in, in the Caribbean. The surrounding grounds are nice, with a variety of fruit trees and shrubs.
The beach at Lower Bay is nice, plenty of trees for shelter (quite a few manchineel, so take care in the rain) with a reef just offshore which creates shallow, safe bathing areas for children. It's easy to step across it, to reach deeper water.
There are no supermarkets in Lower Bay for self catering, so you have to go into Port Elizabeth. It's a long walk to the bus stop. There is a small shop (Petra's mini mart) not far from De Reef which was very helpful when we arrived early evening - we got bread and milk, and even though she didn't have what we needed, she obtained some eggs and butter for us and sent her son round to the apartment with them later on, so that we had something to eat for breakfast. You can't ask for better service than that!

“Much love for De Reef!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2011

KNK have recently wised up to "renting a place" Instead of going A-I. What a difference in privacy, ease & relaxing:) Hoping we will return to Bequia one day-(took 3 days to get there)-we would never stay any place else.
DE REEF:-Lovely setting, plenty of room. Birds out every morning, resident cats & lizards. Although we did not get around the property that much, too many other things to do--De reef has a very nice piece of paradise. A nice little spout to wash your feet off before returning to you room in the drive way. Some really neat trees on the property also.
ROOM QUALITY: We rented the A-Frame house for 1-week. Absolutely perfect for 2! Up stairs the bedroom w/ a small washroom & toilet. Bed was a little small, but we did not mind, mosquito net, which we did not use. Set of drawers, place to hang some items of clothing, fan, TV (we never turned on;) A couple of end tables. Sliding glass doors to small balcony on 2nd floor, where we spent many a late night enjoying our cocktails. Simply lovely!
DOWNSTAIRS: Fully equipped kitchen, w/ smaller fridge-enough room for 1-weeks worth of food & drinks;), table & 2-chairs, small love seat. Full bath w/ shower. We made breakfast every morning & had our lunch & supper on the fly most days. There was also another set of doors leading to another balcony w/ table & chairs. We ate our breakfast here every morning.
SERVICE QUALITY: Our gracious host (J) left fruit in the bowl & keys on the table. We did get in late. So this was great! I cannot really recall when someone came to clean up the A-Frame. Pretty sure it happened @ least once or twice-this review is a little late, we were there in NOV. 2010. If we got too much sand in the place we simply swept up ourselves. No Problem.
WHAT YOU GET BOTTLES OF IN THE BATHROOM: There were @ least 2-soaps in each of the bathrooms. We did not even think there would be that-as this is a self catering rental. TP was also included:) As were towels & wash cloths.
CLIENTELE: Seems the first couple of days we had the place to ourselves. Did not really see anyone. Towards the end of our stay, about 10 older 50+ folks arrived. We were never bothered by anyone staying @ De Reef.
THE OCEAN/BEACH: Must admit the ocean was closer to our little A-Frame than most A-I's we have stayed @. Literally 45 seconds from the door to the water. The water--Ohh sooo beautiful!! We really felt a sense of paradise here:) Calm blue water, we brought floaties & chairs & a cooler down with us every "beach day" we had. We also had The De Reef restaurant there (highly recommend!!) & later on in the week a small shop w/ ice cream & some pastries, cookies, drinks, & sandwiches. Luck y for us (J) let us run a tab @ De Reef restaurant the whole week! So if we got hungry or thirsty we could simply go up & "put it on our tab". Honestly KNK have never been on a beach so lovely with so little people on it. There was a guy to rent chairs from--but we never seen him, & if the beach had 8 or more people on it--it was "getting busy" it was never crowded, never ANY hawkers, never ANY one asking us to buy there wares. So nice & relaxing & again beautiful!
THE FOOD: Again our lovely hostess (J) brought us some (more) fruit to the De Reef Restaurant, Oranges -that were green but oh so sweet & Bananas yummy! We had each with our breakfast on the balcony every morning along w/ fruit bread, cheese(s), very strong coffee, & wonderful juices that come in cartons-that we also mixed w/ our cocktails.
THE DRINKS: LOVE LOVE LOVE HI-ROON BEER!!!! We bought a case @ Knights market a case of Carib & a case of Coke. We purchased our liquor @ duty free @ BGI. Some would not suggest this ie:-to purchase on Bequia. If you want a certain liquor as all cannot be found on Bequia (Crown Royal, Pear Absolute) Go duty free;)
THE ENTERTAINMENT:-You are in paradise-its not too hard to entertain yourself:)
WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW: Bequia is a beautiful & friendly island. We were never in harms way. Even walking @ night, the locals were quite surprised with our headlamps-we never go anywhere without them. The food is great here, try a Roti! Try the beer, try the Lobster Pizza @ Macs! Try to find the best Taxi guy on the Island (GUN;). Try Bequia, we did & we cannot wait to return someday:)
WOULD WE STAY @ DE REEF AGAIN?: In a heart beat!
KNK"S RATING OF DE REEF: The setting, the warm breezes, the ocean, the food, the quality of service from (J), the restaurant right on the beach, the clean coziness of our little A-frame, on a scale of ten De Reef gets an ELEVEN!! Please lets the vacation gods allow us to return someday:) Our best trip so far:)

Room Tip: Book in advance, go in the off season.

“De Reef is De Best”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2010

We went to Bequia as guests of the local Cricket League, organised by John Whitney form the Sailing Vessel Lady Ruth. We had 16 in our party and the accommodation he arranged was with the De Reef Apartments in Lower Bay. With four 'couples' and eight singles to find room for, the De Reef Apartments ideally suited us. Our ages ranged from 21 to 71, with a high level of intolerance and bloody mindedness to take into account.
I did not receive anything but compliments and appreciation for the rooms and houses we occupied. In all we took 5 houses, four being owned by Joan Simmons, and one , a delightful beach house, was being managed by her.
All the houses exceeded our expectations, in size, comfort, facilities and location. Bequia is a kindly, balanced island and this accommodation fits well with the romance and charm of the island.
