No, it is not the Hilton or Westin Resort. It is an beautiful elderly hotel right on the water along the Belmont walkway. A little worn but in a way that adds character. This was our 8th trip to Bequia. It is a sleepy little island. Since I first started going there in the early 80's, it has certainly changed but not that much. It is 18 hours flying time from our home. We were married on Bequia, so it is a favorite place.
Any strolls on Bequia include lots of greetings. The hostess of the Gingerbread is Pat Mitchell, the ex wife of the former Prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, James Mitchell.
The waterfront rooms are done in local hardwood with private balconies 30 feet from the water. Very comfortable. A full kitchen, a spare bed, a galley seating area.
This was our first stay here.
We have always booked villas on Lower Bay and had one booked for this two week stay. A barking dog drove us out after a week. We looked around, decided on the Gingerbread and liked it so much we have booked again for next year.
A short walk to numerous restaurants, stores and shops. A very intimate island on the cusp of the tourist season. From the 1970's canopied Datsun and Toyota pickup taxis to the WW I era ferry that serves the island, this place is very different and just beautiful. A number of good beaches, each with a beach bar/restaurant.
There is a new high speed ferry, lots of charter boats and now some mid sized cruise boats but it is still a sleepy little place where you actually feel you are in the Caribbean and not Hawaii.
Like the first time I was there over 25 years ago.
