There were some nice things about the New Montrose; beautiful view of the hills from the top of the hotel. Lovely breezy restaurant. Located near the botanical garden, and not far from town. Free internet. Outstanding clean floors. Nice balconies.
However, right from the start, the management people were not helpful. There were 2 of us, not a couple, but they refused to give us each a key. "Out ot the question", they said.
There were apparently 2 different types of biting insects in the room. We asked to have the room sprayed for insects, but what they used was air freshener. Then, the management told us to spray the insecticide ourselves, which we did.
Whenever we took a shower, hot water took several minutes to arrive. The cold water spigot was installed backwards, so if you think you're turning OFF the hot and cold, you are cranking up the cold. I only made this mistake once.
We had a kitchenette; for the first 2 days, we noticed that even though the oven was off, it was so hot, we could have baked cookies in it. The smell of gas in the room was persistent until we had the gas line turned off. Then, we had to turn the line on every time we used the stove. It was located on the back wall of a lower cupboard, not convenient.
Things in the room were falling apart, like the side of the sink.
One day, I ordered a fish plate from the restaurant. Chicken came, but when I called to get the fish, their response was "well, why did you eat the chicken?" I felt that I had to make excuses, when it was their mistake.
The charges for the phone included a number of calls that didn't go through. I had to pay for them anyway.
When we paid the bill, they did a fancy calculation. The room rate, quoted in US dollars, was converted to local currency using one rate, then converted back to US dollars using a different rate. Needless to say, this increased the price.
