Actually it was more than our honeymoon, it was also our wedding. We (my husband and I and a couple of friends who did double-duty as witnesses and photographers) absolutely loved our time at HCB, and were very sad to leave. Although Kathryn can be short/curt at times, I give her a lot of credit for answering my many, many questions as I prepared for our week-long stay and our wedding. She arranged our transportation between the airport and HCB, with a rental waiting for us at SeaBiscuit. And she set us up with the justice of the peace.
My husband and I stayed in SeaBiscuit, which had phenomenal views and lots of privacy. Each day we fed the birds while lounging on the deck reading books, and the ocean waves lulled us to sleep and woke us up peacefully. The wind only got bad once, knocking over a vase before we closed up the windows.
My only complaint was all of the ants. We kept the kitchen clean except the garbage only got emptied when housekeeping came (2x/wk), so we just put the garbage by the window so the ants would just crawl along that wall and not across the floor and counter. But they were ALL over the bathroom and bathroom closet. I don't really know why, it's not like there's anything yummy about my makeup brushes and curling iron. [Yes I brought tons of makeup and girly stuff, it was my wedding, after all.]
Our friends stayed in one of the bungalows perched higher up into the hill, so they had some steps to maneuver. Sounded like they had more troubles with bugs, as their place didn't have screens on the windows. That was fine during the daytime but at night it got buggy. If that's a concern for you, make sure to ask when booking whether the bungalow you want has screens on the windows. They didn't have a private pool like we did at SeaBiscuit, but said they never had company at the main pool.
I would not hesitate to recommend HCB to anyone who can handle the terrain. The place is built on steep, rocky land, which isn't dangerous on foot, you just need to watch where you're going and be prepared for lots of steps depending which bungalow you're staying in.
When you're there, be sure to read and contribute to the journal in your bungalow. You'll find tips from past guests, although you'll be a bit bummed to learn you don't have a special relationship with the birds that you'll befriend during your stay. They love anyone who will feed them. :-)
Lastly, HCB really is for the independent traveler. You will not get nightly turndown service, or even daily maid service. You won't have much hot water. Each bungalow is different, not cookie-cutter. The furnishings are a bit dated, but you're there for the view and the peacefulness, not fancy couches or 800-thread-count sheets. There isn't someone working at the reception desk full-time. The Internet connection is very sketchy. And there's no room service or on-site dining. But the beach is a mere two-minute walk and there's a restaurant/bar right there.
Bottom line, we'll go back. Definitely. Traveling to Nevis is a bit pricey so it's not something we can do every year, but when we do go back, we'll definitely stay at HCB again.
Room Tip: Check whether your bungalow will have screens on the windows. Ours did (SeaBiscuit) but our friends...
