We stayed in a supreme room (25) for a week from New Years eve. we arrived slightly shell socked after a long flight and received a warm welcome and explanation of the plantation. It is a stunning property, beautifully maintained with stunning views of the mountain and ocean.
Throughout our stay the hosts and staff team ensured we were comfortable. The house keeping was excellent.
It was great to have a large room with privacy outside so that we could relax completely. The room was well appointed and very comfortable. The bathroom was large and well apointed, if a bit dated. The powerful hairdryer that was supplied was much appreciated - a must when living in a rainforest!
There was a pond immediately behind the room where egrets and various othe critters roosted at night. It took us by suprise how noisy the local wildlife was at night!
The food in the Royal Palm was generally of a high standard. Sunday brunch and breakfast were a pleasure, such a lovely experience eating looking over the ocean.
Residents are required to take dinner by 8pm which is a bit strange as the restuarant is open to others who dine much later. At times we felt rushed by the staff as we enjoy a pre dinner drink, this was often a time when we were chatting with other guests and this was interrupted. We were never offered the opportunity for an after dinner drink.
The swimming pool is wonderful tucked into the old boiling house. watching the monkeys and other wildlife was very entertaining and strolling around the grounds was a pleasure.
As mentioned the plantation is a considerable distance from beaches and Basseterre. The shuttle was helpful to us and actually quite fun- we saw and heard a lot of island life. We also took an island tour with "Mr T" Black Rocks and Brimstone Hill Fortess are amazing and are worth the climb. Romney Manor has been beautifully restored and nestles in rainforest but the batik centre left us cold, the staff incredibly disinterested.
We enjoyed a day in Nevis travelling on the car ferry with an oil tanker and road roller!.Nevis is like a little toy town, quite tiny but beautiful beaches with golden sand. Sitting on Pinny's beach (after lunch at sunshines bar) watching the Pelicans dive bombing for fish was a highlight.
St Kitts generally has two cruise ships a day stopping and visitors pour onto the beaches. They also lunch at Ottley's, so poolside peace may be shattered for an hour or two.
We went to South Friars beach by the shipwreck bar where cruise visitors tend not to be taken to.The beach was lovely and we were given free loungers in return for using the bar as we were staying on the island. Needless to say we enjoyed several Carib beers! Lunch was a chicken or fish sandwich which was great. Your stay on the island is much appreciated by local people and it is a good idea to let them know you are staying. We found having EC dollars was appreciated too. .
We were lucky enough to experience carnival, the colour noise and excitement continued during our stay as everywhere we went during the week the children had their costumes on and were providing impromtu entertainment.
We appreciated the care that Mary and Karen showed on our last day - our flight was delayed and we were provided with a room to shower and change as well as a picnic to keep us going while at the airport.
Ottely's is to be recommended for a completely relaxing experience - the island is facinating and the people charming. It's worth budgeting for taxis to get around. Watch out for the potholes!
Room Tip: Supreme rooms are lovely and spacious. Room 25 does have the pond so the bird noise is loud!
