Sam McCoy's Dive Lodge June 2002I?ve been diving every year since 1976, and this was my third trip back to Little Cayman. I would recommend McCoy's for several reasons. Rooms are nice and comfortable, and the island is so safe that you don't even need to lock your door. The family that runs McCoy's lives on site and they are friendly, laid-back and fun to talk to. It's a small operation with 15 fellow travelers while I was there. Guests can all eat together, so you get to meet everyone. The food was good and they prepared vegetarian meals for me. There is an outdoor bar by the pool, so you get to meet the some of the locals if you choose. The diving is the best in the Caribbean. McCoy's is located right in front of Bloody Bay Wall and it doesn't get any better than that! The wall starts in 30-50 feet of water and drops down several thousand feet. The shallows are good to dive in also. There are alot of crevices and swim-throughs, and since the area is a sanctuary, the fish are very friendly and abundant. Saw a nurse shark who let me get near. A large grouper followed us like a puppy on one dive-- he kept wanting to be petted. We made a great shore dive at night. Dive boats are not crowded and the dive master, Lowell, was extremely nice.Locals are very friendly and so is the wildlife-- seeing the large 4 foot rock iguanas was a highlight. They like to hang out in the road where there are many street signs that say "iguanas have the right of way."If you are looking for a fun, laid-back vacation destination, Little Cayman and Sam McCoy's is the place to go. I'll be going back!
