If you crave an expansive uncrowded beach with plenty of shade, sun and chairs, this is the place for you. We stayed a few condos down the beach at Discovery Point Club several years ago and switched to Silver Sands for this trip and were very happy that we did. The bedrooms have more space and the grounds are more of a campus feel with 7 buildings surrounding a pretty manicured garden/lawn and sizable, deep heated pool. Yes, they have a pool that actually is 9 feet deep - hard to find these days. Discovery Point has a hot tub, but in 85 degree weather in April, that was hardly missed at Silver Sands.
The 2 BR condo wasn't furnished up to our standards for a $500/night (incl tax) accommodation, but that's Cayman. You pay for location. . . which includes the ability to slide fins on and snorkel right off the shore towards cemetary reef and see a wide variety of fish. Almost half of the condos were rentals, the other half are owned. The place was deserted, with maybe 10 units occupied. I heard the same about other condo resorts along 7 mile as well.
I would encourage getting a second floor upper unit as the sound proofing between floors isn't the best. Our unit was one of 3 buildings that border the roadside, so our teens were up early every morn once the traffic got heavy, as their bedroom was on that side of the unit, but again, that's Cayman . . . most of the condos in that northern section of 7 mile are situated along the roadside due to the narrowness of the strip.
Reservations were easy to arrange, staff was helpful in recommending boat captains, etc and their website is very informative, with pictures of all their rental units.
If you're looking for a condo where you can cross the street to get to breakfast or dinner, you might look a mile more south towards Plantana or Avalon.
We did have a non-Silver Sands issue with snorkel rental. Beware of Diver Supply in West Shore Plaza. When we picked up our gear for the week, they indicated the price for every 2 days of rental. When we returned it 6 days later, a different counter person stated that the price was only for the first 2 days and then there's a higher daily rate after that. The rental gear was low quality . . . we would have been much better off simply purchasing better quality gear, hauling it back to the states and paying the additional luggage fee! Or it would be a nice added feature of Silver Sands management to provide rental equipment for a small fee.
