I wasn't sure if I should make this review a good one or a bad one. On the one side, the beach at this resort is really beautiful ...long and super clean, really white sand, beautiful blue ocean...exotic marine life and lots of fun water activities. The hotel is also quiet, very safe, and close to the airport. As a destination its perfect! However, what is being rated here is the hotel not the destination and enjoying a perfect setting is not good enough of an excuse for all the flaws found at the westin Casuarina.
The check in experience was terrible. The room was not available when we arrived. There were still no rooms available at check-in time. We paid for an upgrade to an ocean front room. When we finally got to the room we were disappointed. The ocean view was non existent, it was totally covered by trees. They tried giving us a second room, still no real oceanview. My advice would be that you ask to see your new room before you pay for an upgrade. Most likely it won't be worth it. I believe only the deluxe ocean fronts have a real ocean view. The room felt standard and old, as did the hotel. The staff was rude except for the people who serve in the pool and beach areas. The concierge was totally incompetent - our calls from the room were never answered, our voice messages never returned. When we finally came down to see her, she didn't seem interested in making any helpful suggestions. Another complaint is that we were served old food at one of the restaurants. Regarding food, expect it to be expensive and boring. There aren't many options for a nice dinner around the island. But then again, once you see how nice the beach is you won't really care about this issue. Also, there didn't seem to be any umbrellas by the beach, which is a problem if you don't want to get sunburned. Additionally, the toilets at the common areas of the hotel were dirty. We were looked at funny and ignored when we suggested to the staff the bathrooms could use some cleaning. On our last day, we requested a late checkout but were told this wasn't possible. So the hotel doesn't allow late checkouts but somehow never has a room available at check in time (which by the way is 3 hours after the check outs happen)??? I told the person at the front desk that I would not accept this checkout policy, especially after we were checked in so late. Based on other reviews I read, this seems to be a common issue with everyone.
Finally, this comment may not apply to everyone but I believe its important to note that this hotel is full of families with small children. If you are traveling as a couple just know that the atmosphere is not very romantic. I would not recommend going here for your honeymoon . For couples, I would also recommend a short stay. 3 to 4 nights max.
To summarize, you will have a good trip simply because the beach at this hotel is amazing. However, the starwood hotel group should be ashamed of the quality of this property and some serious efforts should be put in place towards fixing the many problems found at the hotel.
