“excellent choice for beach vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

The prime attraction here is the great beach and man-made "reef" built 30-40 yards from shore. The snorkeling was so convenient and will continue to improve as more and more fish come to this area. Barracuda, spotted rays, parrot fish, trumpetfish, etc. were all seen just a few yards from the beach. The hotel itself is rather expensive but comfortable, and the service for the most part is fairly good, although on one occasion we were unable to get service at the outside tables until we first went to the bar. The Red Sail franchise on site offers assembly-line "adventures", so go elsewhere for better experiences. Overall, we enjoyed a great vacation and would definitely come back to this place.

Dear Maggie22911:

I am glad you had a good time in the resort and you took advantage of the wonderful Reef Balls we have in front of our beach.

The Reef Balls were created to help the beach erosion; however it is the home of a large variety of sea life and it’s a great snorkeling site.

We hope to see you back soon,
Warm regards,
Ingrid Chaves

“A nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We stayed for 4 nights in January. This is not really a resort as we define a 'resort', but a nice hotel in a good location with some amenities.
Every interaction we had with the staff was very pleasant. They went out of their way to make us feel at home. Paula at the front desk when we checked in had a great sense of humor, Cesar at the bellhop desk always asked if there was anything he could do for us each day, Anna serving drinks on the beach always had a smile. Everyone else who got us an umbrella, cleaned our room or served us food and drinks was just as nice. The service is definitely the strong suit of this hotel.
The pool is tiny - about the size of a larger pool you'd find at a nice home. We never even used it as the beach is right there and is beautiful. As other reviewers have said, they put a lot of loungers in a small area, but we always found 2 together and never felt 'on top of' anyone in the next seats over. This area would feel less cramped if people didn't put towels down at 7am to reserve seats and then never use them or use them for an hour at 2pm or so. This is really kind of a silly, no-class thing to do and unnecessary. So future travelers, do all the guests a favor and don't do that.....
As far as drawbacks go, it is expensive. A served cocktail on the beach is about $10 US and the food is about the same expense level. We went across the street to Coconut Joe's for their $6 breakfast (2 eggs, toast, potato cake and bacon) which is about the best deal you can find anywhere on the island. There are liquor stores within walking distance going either way on west bay road, so we mixed our own drinks and saved a lot of money.
The room decor is dated, but when we travel to beautiful destinations like this we only use the room for sleep and shower time. Our 'partial ocean view' room had a nice little balcony and a great view of the water. We enjoyed coffee there every morning and could clearly hear the waves rolling in - very relaxing.
We didn't use the concierge services as we pre-booked all of our activities before we arrived, but they seemed to have a wide selection of activities to choose from.
We'd stay here again on points for sure. If we were paying cash I am not so sure as it's expensive. But the staff was great, the location was great and we were very satisfied.

Room Tip: Choose an ocean view or beach view room. The courtyard rooms are not as nice.

“Great Stay at Marriott”

I stay at this resort everytime I visit the Caymans. Its a clean safe environment and the staff treats you with a smile everytime. The onsite dining amenities although not cheap are good and served in good taste. They are right on the beach and the pool is nice when you just want to dip once in a while and go back to reading a good book.

Room Tip: I spend all my time outside so room preference is not a issue for me.

“Disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Marriott Hotels are known for providing great service, but unfortunately, we did not feel this hotel was managed well. We arrived before check in (4 p.m.- I think is a little late) at 12 noon and were told our room would not be ready until 2 p.m. At 2 p.m. we were told the room was being inspected and was not acceptable. By 2:30 we finally did get a room. We were using points to stay at this hotel and the next day, discovered $1400.00 had been charged to our card. When we inquired about this, we were told it was a mistake and they would call the bank the next day. No communication was made to us if the call had been made or not. We borrowed an umbrella one afternoon, returned it later that day, and the next day we received a letter from the front desk requesting we return the umbrella or we would be charged $CI 51. A simple phone call would have sufficed. TV stations disappeared from our TV after a couple nights even though they could be seen on the lobby TV. When we told the front desk about this, we were told the hotel was having issues with the satellite company. The night before we checked out, the front desk called asking when we were leaving and if we needed a cab. We said we needed a cab and were told we could ask the bellman the next day to get a cab for us. Do not know what the point of the call was other than to make sure we were leaving the next day. Pillows needed to be replaced about 6 months ago. The wait staff by the beach and the outdoor restaurant were very good.

“Not bad for points stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We spent a week at the Marriott. Great beach although relatively small and was very crowded the first couple of days. As usual, everything's more expensive on site so opted for breakfast elsewhere every day and hit up a convenient store near by for bottled water. They didn't have a king bed like we requested when we checked in, so had to be moved after the first night. When they say "partial ocean view" they mean it, only one chair on the small balcony can see the ocean. There was a small fridge in the room, not a mini bar so used that for some snacks and beverages from the local grocery. Service at the beach bar was marginal, very slow. We did their lobster night and were very impressed! Would highly recommend!

Room Tip: Partial ocean view means just that.
