“Avoid”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2007

We checked out after seeing the hotel location, which sits on the a very noisy (old construction trucks) main road and is not within walking distance of a beach. Virgin Gorda is a small beautiful island and you should choose a beach or waterfront hotel as the rest of the island is just dry scrubland. We moved to the Bitter End Yacht club which was great, but most of the other hotels are also on the water.

“My favorite place in the world”

We just returned from 10 wonderful days in Virgin Gorda. We stayed at the Olde Yard Village condos and were very pleased with the accommodations there. Beautifully decorated with a wonderful pool and professional tennis court. There is even a restaurant with excellent food and service. A full functioning workout room was also available. We love this island. The people there are phenomenally nice and friendly. The beaches are beautiful and breathtaking. Many times we found that we had the entire beach to ourselves. No-one is there trying to sell you something, or wanting you to pay to have your hair braided. It is really a place where you can totally relax. We didn't want to leave. We've already booked a trip there for next February!

“Not as nice as we expected”

We took our decision to stay at Olde Yard Village down to the wire, trying to decide between there and Nail Bay. We were a wee bit budget-concious, and basically chose OYV for two reasons: 1) Central location, and 2) Expectation of nicely-appointed digs. We got the first, but not the second. Photos and reviews here led us to expect that though the place was not ocean-front and sat on a busy road, the newness of the condos would offset these disadvantages. We expected to walk in the door of the unit and find it nice. It really wasn't very nice. Strange smell from the bathroom, semi-tacky furniture choices, and an overall un-finished feel. The location was very handy, and we took full advantage of it to explore the whole island. Also, the pool area was quite nice.

Service was spotty. Nobody met us at the ferry dock as promised, and when our cab arrived at the office, it was closed (Sunday afternoon at 3:00) with a sticky on the door advising us to call Sandra to let us in. Luckily the cabbie was still there and lent us his phone. Sandra, who failed to return several phone calls and emails during our attempts to book OYV, really couldn't have been much less friendly while checking us in. Same for the woman working at the poolside bar. Truly surly. Everyone else working at the office the ensuing week was pleasant and helpful. Having no phone in the condo is a pain in the rear. We were limited to going into the office to make calls and inquiries about activities, etc., since our cell didn't work there.

All in all I'd say we were disappointed in OYV. The good location couldn't overcome the inconvenience of the phone thing, quasi-tacky furnishings and spotty service.

“Perfect for our needs”

This was our 12th trip to the Virgin Islands, while our 1st year on Virgin Gorda. We found Olde Yard Village was the perfect spot for our first stay on V.G. Our 2BR unit was nicely appointed. We did make use of the spa as well as the pool after our days at Savannah Bay Beach (an easy 4-5 minute drive from the condo to the beach). We were not bothered by the traffic noise from the street outside our unit at night as we did close the windows and use the A/C due to the eastern exposure of the BR windows and the heat/humidity. We were a bit surprised to learn that the rest. on the property closed @ 3:00pm on weekdays (so we never actually had dinner there, we were still at the beach at that time). This info & the fact that the rest. was not open at all on Mondays (the day we checked in) would have been helpful in our planning. The onsite workout room and laundry facilities are an extra benefit. We found all staff members to be very gracious and helpful in all matters. This property proved to be one of our best values in 12 years of travel to the USVI & BVI during which we have stayed for up to 2 weeks and visited more than 1 property per trip.

“If you value quiet and fresh air, avoid Olde Yard Village”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2007

Olde Yard Village is in a convenient spot on the lovely island of Virgin Gorda. You can walk along the narrow road into town, but that same road also connects the North Sound to The Valley (the town). It gets busy, and Olde Yard Village sits nearly on top of the road. If you like to have your windows open in this beautiful, temperate climate...and why wouldn't you?...pick a different place. The beeping car horns and loud stereos kept us up all night our first night there. We asked to be moved, and to the management's credit, they did put us in a different building. Still, it is almost impossible to escape the road sounds here. No matter which condo you're in, your front bedroom faces the road. We were a party of four in a two-bedroom unit. The back bedroom was quiet until our neighbors turned on the AC. The compressors --- astonishingly --- were on the balcony, directly beneath the back bedroom windows, and even though the building is brand new, the whirring and crackling of the mechanical equipment woke everyone up.
Also, at about 9 a.m. on weekdays, construction starts. OYV appears to be finishing up its last building, but they are still working on landscaping and sidewalks, even though they told us all work was finished. There is a sandy lot directly across the street, an unrelated construction site that was a beehive of activity when we visited Jan. 5-11, 2007.
The on-site restaurant is very good, with excellent espresso, but you could put on your most charming party manners, and the waitstaff will not crack a smile, which is very unusual in the BVI.
