My "then boyfriend" and I discovered Marina Cay on a day trip to the BVI's. We ate lunch at the wonderful restaurant on the beach and were in awe of the natural beauty all around us. I joked that this would be a fabulous place for a beach wedding, and the next day he surprised me by proposing. We quickly decided this was "The Place," and planned the intimate wedding with the help of the general manager, Alison Logi. Six months later we were married at sunset on their beach.
We returned again this past July 2009 for our 1 year anniversary. It was as beautiful as we remembered and most of the staff remembered my husband and myself. It was like going home again.
On the negative side, the ferry is a hassle, and the dock is a bit remote and not well lit. It can seem a little scary at night, but my hubby and I have never had any problems. Just like at home, we try to be alert and aware of our surroundings. Please keep reminding yourself it's an adventure and make the most of your downtime. To kill time before the next ferry, do some shopping or have a drink or meal at the wonderful shops just a short walk over from the pier.
You can easily walk to the ferry dock from the Beef Island Airport. Also if you connect with a taxi driver at the airport when you arrive, you only have to call and they will show up at the ferry dock to take you where ever you want. Just know that they will become "your" driver for your whole trip. We called our driver Sam before we left Marina Cay and he was always waiting for us when we arrived.
Also be aware that you will be eaten alive by mosquitos if you don't load up on bug spray. I have always been a magnet for them, but down there was like nothing I've ever experienced before. Plan ahead!!
I know the resort is currently going through a management turnover, but I'm sure however things turnout, my husband and I will be returning in the future.
