“Not Luxurious, but a location you can't beat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2011

I stayed at Rhymers beach hotel (website: http://www.canegardenbaybeachhotel.com/ ) for 5 nights end of January. The hotel is old and it shows: there may be tiles missing in the walls in your bathroom, windows that once closed perfectly may not do so any more. But, it's kept well clean, and everything works. The rooms have airco, which may be a bit noisy, but not more so than the ones I've seen in real expensive hotels. There is nobody at reception during the night, which was bit of a problem when the circuit breaker for my airco broke one night and nobody could fix it, but that was not a major problem (slept with the balcony door open).

This is one of the cheapest hotels I've found on Tortola - I paid about $100 a night. The location cannot be beat: right at the best beach in Tortola (all the taxi drivers I talked to told me that Cane Garden Bay has the best general purpose beach), snorkeling right in the bay. Only downside is that many people from cruiseships visit the beach each day as well. Still, it's not really crowded, and as a hotel guest you have your first choice of (free) beachchairs in the morning.

The beach contains a couple of restaurants and beach bars, which all serve wonderful food and drinks (sometimes aimed a bit too much at US taste; I'd prefer more local dishes), and there's live music and beach BBQs at least a couple of nights a week.

If you want to get out of the bay, you'll have to climb some steep roads (or get a taxi / rental car). I did like the hikes in early morning, but it's a bit more than just a leisurely walk. You can walk to Road Town in about 1.5 hours, or to Brewers Bay in about 45 minutes.

The hotel offers free Wifi, although I couldn't get a reception in my room. Also, Wifi only worked about 50% of the time.

I'll be sure to go back there again next time I'm on Tortola.

“Perfect budget option right on the beach!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2011

We stayed at Rhymer's Dec 28-Jan 2 for 5 nights for just $100 per night, which we thought was a good deal for a budget option right on the beach. The room had a queen and a twin bed, a kitchenette (small stove, fridge, sink, and a few dishes and pots), a bathroom (good hot shower) and a private patio. Furniture and bedding is somewhat dated, which is to be expected at this price, but everything is clean and things are cleaned and towels replaced daily. You also get to use beach chairs and beach towels for free. And you can't really beat being right by the beach.

There is a small outpost of the bigger supermarket Bobby's nearby as well as a Scotiabank ATM (partner with Bank of America).

From Roadtown, the ride is about 20 mins. We didn't have a car, so we took shared cabs. If there are at least 3 people in the cab, it's $8 per person to either Roadtown or West End.

Food is pretty expensive everywhere (and not that great), so a kitchenette is helpful. We brought some food with us (supermarkets are also very expensive on Tortola), and we had some cheaper options from the nearby places (like $9 ribs appetizer from Myett's which was very good).

The staff at the hotel itself is great, but the staff at the attached restaurant could be a lot friendlier.

Overall, this is a great option right on the beach if you're looking for no-frills convenient accomodations on Tortola.

“Great Place, Gorgeous Views!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2010

This is a very adequate hotel on a beautiful half-moon, palm-fringed Caribbean beach called Cane Garden Bay. There are several good beach restaurants right along this stretch of sand. Our rooms (our daughter and son-in-law, plus a good friend traveling alone) were all on the side of the hotel, opening onto a small 'L' of the larger common veranda, which made our rooms nice and quiet. The large veranda had gorgeous views. Several beach chairs and umbrellas on the beach in front. Just realize you are not in a 4-star luxury place, but perfectly OK, in a relatively unspoiled piece of paradise. Quito's Gazebo, a very good restaurant with live music, is a very short walk, and Myett's is quite good, too. We stayed here on either side of a bareboat sailing charter through the BVI's, one of our favorite things in the world to do.

“Home away from Home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2010

Rhymers is out of the way, great friendly staff and just a comfy place to rest when on vacation. Located right on the beach with a restaurant, gift shop, deck over looking the bay and just a walk down to beach to other eating establishments, and music. Swim, fish, walk the beach or shop. Everything you need for a relaxing vacation.
