“Character & Relaxation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We traveled to Grand Case for 1 week and stayed at this beautiful property. To put this in context, our recent vacations have been to Aruba and Los Cabos - so they are our comps for this review.

Rooms (Garden View) - Overall: 8.5/10
- the rooms are very clean with updated bathroom and kitchens (granite)
- somewhat simple decor; yet cute and classic
- in room safe, private balcony, a/c, cable tv
- bed was very comfortable and rooms had a true Caribbean character; very relaxing
- only issue was that the TV was small and dated

Food - Sunset Cafe - Overall: 8.5/10
- Breakfast (7/10) - continental consisted of pastries, OJ, coffee and breads; it was the same every day so it got somewhat tiresome. However, you can order more off the menu but we felt that the quality was not great and not worth the extra money.
- Lunch (8/10) - good selection and good quality
- Dinner (10+/10) - the dinner service was absolutely fantastic - the quality, presentation and beachfront view was very impressive. The wine list was very reasonable and the service from Philippe the manager was the best we have had at a restaurant globally. We had so many great conversations with him and his staff; he personally went out of his way to ensure we had a great experience. We highly recommend the Sunset Cafe for dinner. There are many other restaurants in grand case as well - we tried Le Cottage (6/10), Piazza Pascal (10/10), and La Villa (9/10) - more details on the restaurants review pages.

Beach/Pool - Overall: 8.5/10
- there are two beaches at the resort; one has room for chairs and is good for sunbathing , while the other is better for swimming. The water was crystal clear and the snorkeling was great as well.
- regardless of the time of day we never had to wait for a chair or umbrella
- pool was small but private on the rooftop of the cafe; very clean with great views

Location - Overall: 9/10
- located on the french side of the island - a quick 5 minute walk into Grand Case - close to restaurants, shops, bakery, and convenience store for groceries. We felt safe walking at night - the resort has security on the path to Grand Case but we felt safe even without
- no casinos around on the french side
- we ended up taking a taxi to Marigot and Philipsberg one day to shop and that was enough for us; we loved staying in grand case as it was truly relaxing

Summary - Overall: 9/10
Pros - location, sunset cafe dinner, relaxation, beautiful grounds, romantic
Cons - breakfast variety and quality, no casinos, limited nightlife, expensive

“Perfect Low-key Beach Resort With All The Necessary Amenities.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Dream your days away on the beach. In the evening stroll into town for some of the best French food this side of France.

A very attractive tropical property with all the requirements for a perfect relaxing getaway. Our clean, modern efficiency room was on the ground floor with a nice patio, just steps away from an esplanade lined with comfortable lounges, thatch umbrellas, and box-trimmed trees. The water comes very close to the esplanade, so there isn’t much free-sand beach here, but the area is very nice for swimming and relaxing. The Petite Plage is separated from the esplanade by the attractive Sunset Café. The Petite Plage is a beautiful, somewhat isolated beach complete with lounge chairs, umbrellas and gorgeous views of the ocean and hills.

The property is nicely landscaped with lots of blooming vegetation. The staff is competent and helpful. The clientele in January were quiet, mannerly and laid-back. A big plus: the room had tight screens on all the windows, including the large slider on the patio. As a result, mosquitoes were not a problem and the cross ventilation was so good we didn’t need to close up the room and use the AC. (This is contrast with many Caribbean islands where the rooms either have no screens or the windows are not tight, resulting in a constant battle with horrible mosquito bites). One complaint was the very high cost of the computer internet service in the office. It seems this should be a service to paying guest, not a chance to hit them with exorbitant rates.

It’s a comfortable walk into the town of Grand Case filled with great French restaurants, a couple of good local grill-type lolos, French bakeries, small grocery stores and an internet café. There is a wonderful little crepe stand, and on Tuesday nights there’s a local street fair with many little stands offering food and other local items for sale. It’s a longer, but manageable walk over to the main road where it’s possible to catch buses and local transportation vans to Marigot for the grand sum of $3US.

We loved the Grand Case Beach Club and can’t wait to go back to back.

“OK - but could do better...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

We recently stayed here for 3 nights - 2 at the beginning of our stay and 1 at the end.

For having paid $400 + upfront per night - we expected better. Upon check in and being shown a pretty average room - without a view - we asked to be upgraded and were for a small supplement. The rooms themselves were tired and in need of an upgrade - and not 100% clean - not dirty - but definitely could do better - in the fact the property overall is a bit tired. The beach areas in front of the hotel are fine - and they have a water sports cafe on premises where you can book snorkeling tours etc. If you do stay here - make sure you ask for a water front room.

The staff in the hotel were generally were a bit off. However - the sunset cafe is the opposite - the staff there were lovely and the food was very good and reasonably priced.

The location is great - on the french side - and a short stroll to all the restaurants - which were of a very high quality in general.

I have to agree, we could be better...and we are diligently working towards that goal. I hope that you noticed the new (since December) fabrics in all of the rooms, and the many improvements that we make each and every year. Our moto "Better today than yesterday, better tomorrow than today" is very much alive and part of how we conduct business daily. We are human, and I am sure that we can miss the mark, but the staggering amount of repeat clientele that we are blessed with does say that we are frequently on target. We are not a "cookie cutter", corporate type of hotel, we can be quite quirky at times, and it takes a special type of person to get the most out of what and where we are. Thank you for taking the time to write a review, and be assured that we take it seriously...yours and all the others are studied by our staff with the intention of overall improvement.

“Very pleasant stay”

Recommended by our nephew (who is a regular at GCBC), we enjoyed out stay very much. The upper floor rooms with loft/bedroom are comfortable, have great views and come with a kitchenette (and kitchen equipment) capable of doing any cooking you are likely to want to do.
The air conditioning will freeze you if you let it (tip/that temp control is a remote - remove it from it's holder and point it at the A/C to operate).

Sunset cafe on site is great for breakfast (menu if you want more than juice, rolls and coffee), reasonable price ); payment is in euros. Lunch is good too - didn't try dinner. The Cafe payment is separate from the hotel bill, although they will run a tab for your room number. You have to settle with the cafe directly when you leave.

While on the money subject, cash is king. Most shopes and restaurants in Grand Case - many 5 star, BTW - take cash in dollars or euros on a 1 for 1 basis. Credit cards, however, are charged in euros. Americans, plan to pay in cash. Europeans, plan to exchange euros for dollars. ATMs, by the way, are not to be found on the French side (they are on the Dutch side, putting out US dollars).

Food, decent (not particularly great) at the so called 5 star restaurants in town. Food is surprisingly good at the "lolos", open sidewalk food vendors grilling ribs, chicken and lobster (you have to ask, it's not obvious like the ribs and chicken) on home made oil drum grills. If you go to Maho beach to watch airplanes land, the pizza (cooked in the back of an old van - small street bar on the 'near' side of the causeway) is outstanding. Don't know how they do it.

Rental cars available at the hotel (Prestige Value rentals - for US $28/day), but book in advance. They're hard to come by during high season - much cheaper than other French side options/euros - I beleive they're a Dutch side operation). They have a high tax rate on the island, and between other charges, it comes to almost US $50/day at the end. You can pick up the car at the hotel or the airport. If you get it at the hotel, there's a flat $30 dollar drop off fee to return it at the airport, but depending on the time you picked it up, they don't charge for the day you drop it off if you're within a few hours of 24.

Pretty beach, and those little blue flags on/by the recliners are signals for drink service, "up" means send the waiter over.

Wi Fi service very iffy, depending on where and when. One day it was fine, another it was slow or no connection.
One gripe, they're "too busy" to allow you to print boarding passes - there is no 'business/computer' center. They did offer to allow me to 'email' my boarding pass to the office and they would print that for me. Didn't know how to email/attach a boarding pass, so didn't try it.

Driving, right side like US - crazy motor bike riders - (tip/ drive around local airport to get to GCBC rather than try to drive through town). Driving through any town (especially Marigot, on the way down from GCBC to Phillipsburg etc. on theDutch side) is a nightmare...and you have no choice - only one 'main' road around island. A 20 minute ride at night with no traffic can easily take an hour during the day (note this if you're driving to catch a flight).

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms may be had if you're willing to change rooms during your stay. We were told onl...

“We will return!”

We were delighted with our week stay at the Grand Case Beach Club - a lovely and tranquil location. The accommodation and service was excellent and well kept. We stayed in an immaculate one bedroon apartment complete with stereo, TVs, kitchen. The bed was so excellent (and I have back problems) that we checked for the mattress name. Most of our time was spent relaxing on the patio or balcony watching the sunset after a day at the island's beautiful beaches (11 in 7 days). Once after a lovely light rain we were in awe of the double rainbow over the bay. Each night headed off into Grand Case for a fantastic gourmet meal. We would recommend Le Soleil for dinner out of all the restaurants that we tried - very initimate, with great food and service! The rainbow cafe at the other end of the beach was great for lunch and an expresso. After dinner we spent several nights dancing to the saxy music of Miek. The carnival celebration on Tuesday nights is a must attend event. If you are visiting the island the top 3 beaches on our list are Orient, Baie Rouge and Friers. The trip to the little island beach by ferry was also a great experience. All in all - money well spent for a great week and we can't wait for our next visit. We will definitely book back into the Grand Case Beach Club and ask for the same accommodation. Falling asleep each night to the sound of the waves is very soothing.
