What a lovely place to stay. I was worried about the location being so close to the airport and the 1st morning we did hear planes early in the am but after the 1st day they were not even noticable. We liked the location because it was close to good restaurants, watersports and beaches. In general, we found activities on the French side much more expensive so with 2 children the Dutch side was perfect for us. My husband and I joke because I never want to go to the same place twice as I believe there are too many places in the world I want to visit, but I would definitely go back to the Horny Toad. Betty, the owner and Cherry, the housekeeper are awesome. Betty is a jewel to visit with, very personable and knowledgeable about the island so she can give you suggestions for anything you want. Cherry, the housekeeper was an absolute joy to visit with. Anything you wanted she got you. The accomodations were impecable, very clean and comfortable. The view was wonderful. In fact, we cooked in most of our meals because it was so relaxing to sit on the patio overlooking the ocean with a glass of wine, eating dinner. We played games every night with our children and watched the sun set. May not be a place for everyone but for our desires (on the beach, awesome view, clean, comfortable with a kitchen), it was perfect. We went to Anguilla the week before and wished we had spent less time there and more time at the Horny Toad.

The Horny Toad is the perfect destination for people who like quiet, clean, unpretentious accomodations. Betty and her staff take excellent care of you, and are ready with suggestions, hints and directions to the best places on the island. Our expectations were met and exceeded on every level. Truly a unique experience, and one which we hope to repeat again and again.

I wish I could pick up the Horny Toad and transplant it to all the other Caribbean islands I'd like to visit. I visited Dec. 9-17, 2004. The Horny Toad may not be luxurious, but it's VERY clean and VERY comfortable. And everyone there, especially the owner, Betty Vaughn, is very helpful. She has a lot of information based on her more than 22 years on the island to make your stay pleasant. And how can you go wrong with a guesthouse that has its own loyal hound - Boozer, a black lab. For those who want to save money, you can't do better than the Horny Toad. Given its location, a side street about a quarter mile away or so from the main drag of Simpson Bay, I think renting a car is a necessity if you stay here. Good restaurants would also be a long walk away. You can save a lot of money by using the kitchen (it's a full kitchen with oven, microwave, four burners and a full-size refrigerator) to cook some or all of your meals. There are a few large supermarkets on the island that have great takeout dishes. The large supermarket outside of Marigot is particularly good.

Forget about those large condo/timeshare resorts. The Horny Toad Guesthouse is the place to stay if you really want to relax. We stayed on the second floor with a wonderful oceanfront view of Simpson Bay. A portable air conditioner was offered to us, but with the ceiling fan and the Carribean breeze , there was absolutely no need to use artificial air! The staff is very friendly and helpful.The maids do a terrific job of cleaning your unit. With only 8 total units, this is always a very peaceful place to relax. It was very difficult to end our vacation!
