We arrived at Stonefield following a lovely 40 minute drive from Vieux Fort. The location is great, with a view to the petit piton on one side and the town of Soufriere on the other. Very quiet, green relaxed environment. Reception was quick in the center cabin and we were than escorted to our room. Room itself was very big and included a great balcony facing the valley (with an awesome hammock) and a nice little private pool facing the valley. There was a large nicely equipped kitchen, big bedroom and outdoor shower. One thing pretty easily noticeable is that the bathroom is not closed by a full wall from the rest of the “apartment” and connected to both bedroom and kitchen via mutual walls, BAD planning IMO.Furthermore closets really left bad smell on cloths, we left things in the suitcases.
Our issues with Stonefield revolved around the “fine touches”, attitude and the dining. We found the onsite restaurant to be of rather low quality although very presumptuous on both price (min $100 / couple without wine for 2 course dinner) and description of items. Location although offering a great view was never really sealed against the strong winds and rain which are very common in St. Lucia.
Staff here seemed to really want to move fast “in out”, and the music was TERRIBLE, why in the world would you keep playing the best of Barbara Streisand and Paul Young when the Caribbean is blessed with so much good music. Staff claimed “that’s what guests want’, yah right!
We felt the room REALLY lacked amenities (very low level shower gel and shampoo that were not even refilled daily), water heater did not work 3 out of 4 nights even after we commented. No Wi FI in the room (they claim its policy for our relaxation but honestly not a big fan of sitting at the outdoor reception or restaurant in the rain / wind getting emails)
The vibe in this place was that they are “cheap” , for $500 / night you can expect very nice toiletries, something more than two supermarket cookies for a welcome and some kind of discount on the super over priced meals or spa.
The hotel is rather far from the beach (Jalousie is the best around and the road is super complicated and sometime impossible to drive, during rain) .
Jalousie charge $20 / day / person for beach chairs and can’t even give parasols. However the beach is beautiful and food there is much better than Stonefield. We would expect Stonefield to have a real agreement in place for their guests to get complementary access to beach chairs.
To summarize:
Very nice place but unless there is an attitude change I recommend to look for better value on the Island. For example see my review of TiKaya.
