My husband and I honeymooned in St Lucia two years ago April. We spent two weeks in St Lucia. The first week was at Ladera. We could not have asked for a better experience!
If you are looking for marble floors and granite countertops, Ladera is not for you. If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind experience, it doesn't get any better than Ladera!
LOCATION AND GETTING THERE - The roads are mountainous and curvy in St Lucia, so there is no direct route anywhere. But the cab ride to Ladera from the airport was reasonable in time and cost. Getting to resorts on the other side of the island can take hours on winding roads (the trip often makes visitors sick). Ladera is also very close to Soufriere where a number of the boat tours depart.
ARRIVAL - We were greated with a cocktail and a very short sit-down meeting with the receptionist who welcomed you and explained that there were no wrist bands to wear for the all-inclusive package. The service is so impeccable at Ladera, they keep up with your tab (and it was accurate at check out). Luggage was waiting in our room when we arrived.
ROOMS - We stayed in a Hilltop Dream Suite. The suite was a huge two-level open air room with amazing views from both the lower level (where the living area and private pool are located) and the upper level (where the bedroom is located). The beautiful scenery combined with the calming sound of water flowing into our private pool left us completely relaxed. There are no TVs or radios... you shouldn't want one in a place like this. The suite was clean and there were no insects (the higher altitude and sea breezes prevent bugs).
FOOD - We got the all-inclusive plan. It is a great deal because the food (prepared by Chef Orlando and his team) is incredible. We travel a lot and expected the usual average resort food. Not here! The food is made fresh with local ingredients and is mouthwatering. I would go back just to eat. I do suggest the all-inclusive plan because it appeared that dinner averaged about $150 otherwise (note: dinner was also of $150 quality). The breakfast and lunch meals were equally impressive. You must try the local made banana jam during breakfast! While lounging in our private pool, we often called roomservice for the steak skewers with jerk mayo sauce.
FACILITIES - We never used the main pool, but it was nice and had a great view of the Pitons. The spa (at the time) was admittedly less than impressive. But I hear that the resort is working on that.
BEACH - Because Ladera is on the ridge between the Pitons, walk-out access to the beach is obviously not possible. But Ladera has an arrangement with a nearby Jalouse Plantation Resort to use that beach. Ladera provides transportation for the short drive down the hill where you can swim between the Pitons. It's wonderful.
MARKET TOUR - We highly recommend the Market Tour with Chef Orlando. He took us into Soufriere to the local market where he identified fruits, vegetables, and spices that we had never heard of. We were able to taste some and he explained how they may be used. Then he took us into a local bakery to see how it was made. Upon returning to Ladera, he gave us a great cooking lesson with some participation.
OTHER ACTIVITIES - Many of the excursions are on this side of the island. While at Ladera, we strolled through Soufriere, went on a zip-line, and took a dolpin & whale watching tour (saw no whale, but lots of dolphins).
GIFT REGISTRY - I added Ladera to my gift registry. To our surpise, when we arrived at Lader there was a welcome basket in our room with classy gift cards identifying the excursions that our friends had purchased for us during our stay.
SERVICE - Fantastic! No seriously, it doesn't get any better. We loved the banana jam so much that the owner of Ladera actually brought a jar of banana jam to us when she visited Atlanta! The room service, bartenders, and waitstaff were professional. They were attentive without being intrusive.
This is not a resort for families. Leave the kids at home.
We can't wait to go back. Maybe for our 10-year???
Room Tip: Other reviewers have complained of road noise. I can vouch that the Hilltop Dream Suites are quiet.
