My husband and I honeymooned at Sandals La Toc in October, 2011. Let me start off by saying the island of St. Lucia is absolutely gorgeous and the people are just as amazing. Make sure you take time to explore this beautiful island! We went zip-lining in the rainforest, traveled to the volcano to bath in the sulfur mud springs and rinse off in a near by waterfall, had a blast with "Joe Knows" adventures, and got to see the rest of the island via the helicopter airport transfer! ****make your excursion reservations outside of Sandals, you will save a lot of money! Also, wait for the daily specials when booking the spa (We booked a couple's massage for $360...later that week, the couple's massage special was $180. Ouch)
With that being said, lets talk about the resort. First of all, this is no where near a 5 star resort. Now, I will admit that my husband and I have high expectations, however, we work hard to play hard. We save up our money to spend on vacations where we can be pampered and just enjoy ourselves. When we spend the amount of money we did for this "five star" resort; we expect exceptional service, great food, and an overall experience that we can't wait to come back to.
The La Toc grounds, themselves, are very beautiful, the lobby and welcoming service were very friendly. Our room was average. We had an ocean view, and it was just that- a slight view of the ocean. Now, I can't complain because any ocean view is better than my view at home or work. The room and bed were sufficient with an island feel. Our only complaint with the room was the bathroom- there is no air conditioning in there and it got rather hot and humid.
The worst part of our trip, and the reason for writing this review, was the service and food. Again, enter the "five star" expectations.......every morning we had to literally tackle a server for coffee, ketchup and cream. What five star facility has 3 bottles of ketchup for 30 tables? Not an exaggeration. The alcoholic beverages were watery and the bar service lackluster, even with hefty tipping. There were many just okay restaurants, but most you had to make reservations days in advance. Oh, and if you're excited about some great fresh seafood on your island vacation, forget about it. I've had better seafood at Red Lobster. We regret not venturing off the resort to a local restaurant for seafood- but why should we have to?? It should be all-inclusive, right?
About half way through our honeymoon, we visited the Halcyon. This resort was definitely much more reserved than our mostly young adult resort (not a bad thing), but let me say the service and quality of food and alcohol were leaps and bounds beyond La Toc. We wish we had chosen to stay there instead.
We won't be revisiting Sandals La Toc, or any Sandals resort for that matter. We will be spending our hard earned money in a place with exceptional service and experiences. If you just want a beautiful place to have fun in and get out of the daily grind, you will find Sandals more than sufficient. If you're looking for a luxury resort with great service, food and alcohol- look elsewhere.
