I know this review is a bit late, but I felt, given some other reveiws on this site, that I best put my two cents worth in. Our trip was in January 2006.
We visit St. Lucia for approximately 3 -6 weeks per year, so I would consider myself something of a local expert on the island.
We were actually staying elsewhere in Rodney Bay and absolutely HAD to move. We literally walked down the main street, poking into hotels and resorts, asking for availability and rates (we still had 18 days left of our holiday)....St. Lucia is not an easy place to "just walk in and get a room", especially in the winter months. Further, we have a teenager and don't share a room, so we needed not one, but two rooms and for 18 days...
When we approached the Tuxedo Villas reception, we were met with a warm welcome. There were no two-bedroom villas available right away. But they did have a one bedroom that they could give us for 1 night and then they would be happy to move us to a 2 bedroom suite the next day.
Let's start with the staff. They actually sent one of the young men working there with us, to help us haul our stuff from our previous location....He was polite, kind and very helpful. Thanks Jonathan!
Ms. Marie cleaned our room on a daily basis and treated us like her children by about the third day of our stay. She was amazing. She was very kind. Knowing that we had not planned on three weeks in a hotel type setting, she even offered to do some washing for us - for FREE!!! (We left her a very nice tip).
We had all the typicial little experiences with our room. I blew the pilot light on the stove (because I am not used to gas stoves and didn't really know what I was doing). Serge was there in less than 5 minutes, laughing with me and getting it up and running again and teaching me how to use the stove properly :) . We ran out of fuel at one point - again - 5 minutes or less for help.
Darwin was awesome to our family and made us really feel like valued guests, not customers.
The room itself was perfect. Two bedrooms, two baths and a living room with Cable TV, kitchen, with pots, pans, dishes, etc...It was kept immaculately clean as were the grounds and the pool in the courtyard. If we took off in the morning having left dishes in our sink, Ms. Marie washed them for us. WAY ABOVE AND BEYOND WHAT WAS REQUIRED OF HER. The beach is literally across the street and there are more restos within walking distance (and two grocery stores) than you could possibly want.
Serge (the handyman) helped us get some local lobster directly from the gros islet docks, getting up early, and coming to the hotel at 6:00 am to get my hubby to go to gros islet with him to talk to the fishermen directly. My hubby made his deal directly with the fishermen. Serge though, being super nice, got the $ from my hubby, and went back to gros islet in the afternoon and picked up the live lobsters and delivered them to us back at the hotel, saying we should just enjoy the lovely day on the beach. He taught us how to keep them alive til it was time to cook them and then went hunting for a BIG pot to boil them in.
We at one point made a comment to Jonathan that both JQ and Julians (the two local groceries) were out of black pepper - something our family uses a lot. The next evening, when Jonathan arrived for the night shift, he had a package of black pepper with him that he had picked up in Castries. No one needs to do stuff like this, but they all did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's just the way the place operated.
Because we were originally staying (the place we evacuated to move to Tuxedo Villas) in a suite with 110 volt power converters (FYI: St. Lucia is 220 volt power -unlike North America), we had not brought converters for our electrical appliances. NO PROBLEM. When I needed to charge my camera batteries, etc... I took them to reception and left them there (they have the reception and a couple of the suites partially rewired (for computers, etc,) so they had the right plugs at reception. They let us use their computer to send e-mail home and download pictures from our cameras - all for free. I even stood in the back office of reception and blow dried my hair on two evenings that we were going out for "romantic" suppers without our munchkin.
The hotel arranged a transfer back to the Vieux Fort airport and saved us about $50.00 on that. We arranged a hired car through the hotel as well (more saved $).
Regarding thefts: NOT ONCE did so much as a nickel escape or walk out of or disappear from our room!!!! I left jewellery out... We had 2 digital cameras, an 8 mm camcorder, my son's gameboy and all of our dive computers, etc... in our room. It would have been a haul! We came and went and never had a problem!!!! If there have been thefts (which I note all over the trip advisor site at many hotels in many countries), I can assure you it isn't the staff at this resort! Why anyone would be foolish enough to leave a large amount of cash in a hotel room - and I don't care how nice a resort, where it is or what island its on - is beyond me. Common sense people!!!!!! You don't do that anywhere!!!
THIS PLACE IS SPECTACULAR. I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT IT. WOULD WE GO BACK? ABSOLUTELY! WOULD I RECOMMEND IT TO MY BEST FRIEND? WITHOUT HESITATION!!!!
