We just returned from a 3 night stay at the Hostelerie. Our first impression was negative, few cars, unattended garden, empty restaurant, it seemed like the business is near bankruptcy. The room was equally dissapointing: the door lock was old and rusty, the balcony door didn't close at all, the sink was clogged, the towels were old, there were no toiletries other than a two small cheap soap bars, the little garden was full of spider webs, the chairs and table in the balcony dusty and to our suprise, the bathroom was invaded at night by cockroaches. However, after the first day we began to warm up: the staff is exceedingly friendly, we could use the Internet in the lobby and the breakfast was delicious. We dined one evening and we probably had the best dining experience on the island; the hotel is close to everything and it feels like home. The bedsheets were clean and the bed comfortable. Overall, we had a wonderful time. We would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to see St Barts without paying the lofty prices of the island's boutique exclusive hotels; it makes a perfect base to explore the beaches, Gustavia and St Jean are only 10 min driving away. However, the hotel needs some work to keep up with the business. It's hardly advertised anywhere and probably just a little bit of reinforecement would fill up the restaurant, which in turn could bring the cash for much needed renovations. In some instances, such as cleaning the spider webs, de-clogging the sink or spraying an insecticide to kill the bugs, the owners just need to be a little bit more attentive, afterall they are running a hotel and in any circumstance, regardless of the number of "stars" the hotel has, any guest would expect a minimum level of cleanliness. It's hard to give a bad review to the Hostelerie because we felt so good there, however, some things do need to be improved. We'll be back!
