“The Staff Make The Hotel.”

I think you get a quick idea of what St Barth's is all about when you notice that even the guy who carries your luggage off your charter plane is wearing an Hermes belt.

"Welcome to paradise!" said our driver. And indeed I hoped it would be.

The Christopher didn't disappoint on arrival and initial walk around. It's very nicely laid out. Our room was pleasant enough - but was it worth 630 Euros?! It was pretty basic for that kind of money. However, every hotel on St Barth's is ridiculously over-priced. High prices are fine if you're getting something exceptional in return. Only you can decide if you think St Barths's is exceptional.

The pool area was very good, you never felt on top of anyone. And it's a good sized pool. And always, from your room, the pool, the restaurants, you have a great view.

Others have mentioned there is no beach. That wasn't an initial problem. However, I didn't realise you wouldn't be able to walk to one either. You have to drive everywhere. Plus, if you want a hotel with a beach then chose very carefully. We had lunch at other hotels which are on the beach, and none of them had a very inviting sea - despite what their website photos may show you. Possibly the Eden Rock is one of the better options, however it's far too nouveau riche for my tastes. So, I can honestly say, after visiting 5 other hotels on St Barth's, I totally believe we made the right choice in staying at the Christopher.

I think what does make the Christopher very good is the staff. It's a young crowd, and I suspect many of them wont work there for long as they like to move around.
There was also a real mix of nationalities. The girls on reception were ALL excellent. Everything was done with respect, manners and a smile. In the restaurants there's an Italian gentleman (Andrea?) who is superb, personable, and makes sure all guests are happy. A huge 'thank you' to the excellent Dammann who is superb at her job. There's a lovely pretty Scottish girl working at the moment, and some very sweet French girls too - I wish I could remember all their names. These are all the people who made staying at the Christopher a good experience.

Now, the gripes. Wi-Fi was very slow and irritating. Most TV channels are in French. I know this is the French West Indies, but I suspect most guests don't speak French. And most other Caribbean hotels have Cable TV. We didn't like the bed at all - far too soft and bouncy. Lighting in the bathroom is dreadful for men who need to shave. We didn't have a bath - and we didn't need one. But if you want one, then make sure you book a room with one. But the shower room was excellent.
Now, the evening dinner. I kid you not - some of the most superb lamb and chicken we have ever tasted. Amazing ... but, always served at the table luke warm. The chef is doing a disservice to his cooking and his guests. Get it right. Guests are most likely going to be paying anything from 120 to 200 Euros for dinner (for 2), so make sure it's hot when served.

Would we stay at the Christopher again? Yes. But is there any point in returning to St Barth's? No. Europeans may as well just fly to St Tropez, or anywhere busy along the Cote d'Azur. Ultimately St Barth's has built itself up as a fashion/location/lifestyle brand - it felt to me like I was on holiday on a branded logo. It certainly doesn't feel like the Caribbean. But ultimately, I do very much feel that selecting the Christopher as our hotel was the correct choice.

So, back to "welcome to paradise!" - was St Barth's paradise? No, not in the least, as far as I'm concerned. There are better Caribbean islands with more stunning beaches and clear blue sea. However, if your idea of paradise is walking around covered in fashion logo's and praying you're richer, slimmer, and have had more plastic surgery than the next person, then you've come to the right place.

“Great value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

This is a great find in St Bart's...great value, great views, great hard working and professional staff with very nice bar/restaurant for lunch. The ground floor rooms are rather dark but otherwise ok, the second floor brighter and worth the little extra, but most with no outdoor space. There is frankly nothing else in this league and price range on the island.

“The Christopher is the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

Just wanted to write a quick review of the Christopher. First time staying there and its fantastic. Great Rooms, Great Views, Great Pool, Great Food, and the Staff is fantastic. Credit to Andrea who runs Food/Bev and Miro who runs the property. (How often do you get to know Hotel Mgmt because the service is so good?) Their teams are great and friendly. The Housekeeping staff was awesome. Rooms clean the instant you leave. 40 something rooms and a staff of about 50 keep this place in top form.

Great sunsets from the Christopher, and everything is 10 minutes away (Every beach, St Jean, Gustavia). We have been to St Barth before, and compared to other properties on the Island- The Christopher is the only hotel we will ever stay at in the future.

“Even Better that I expected”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

Juts came back from St. Barths (Jan 14th, 2012) where we stayed at the Christopher. Very very relaxing. Staff is very courteous and helpful. Rooms are excellent. Pool Space is top notch. The hotel's setting and views from basically anywhere are beautiful.
Food is good, breakfast is great, pool lunches OK. Dinner -for the prices- could be better. Room service is very good and 24hrs.

I think this might be worth adding to other comments on this site:

-There is plenty of space on the pool deck. Space is designed to have many "good spots"; There seems to always be good availability and there are not too close to each other. All have good positioning vs sun as the entire area is hit directly by the sun for almost the entire day. Sun set is daily display. Sun beds are very comfortable and kept clean. Bar is a stone's throw away and staff helpful and quick. No need to run early to get a good space.
No beach, but pool deck is right over rocky shore, which makes for relaxing crashing waves sound.

- The ambience is also relaxed. No "show" nor glitz at this hotel. Everyone seems to be doing his/her own thing. Very mixed crowd: some younger couples, some with kids, some older, some larger 5 or 6 people groups. I would say guests are 1/3 american, 1/3 french, 1/3 mixed latin american and other european. This mix, we found a plus. Hotel has a pool and lunch day-pass, so you sometimes get couples from the island relaxing. Most up scale (well it is St Barths), but decent people, meaning, not loud nor obnoxious. Also good, this is not a spot for singles.

- Most rooms seem to be recently renovated and they are very well thought out. Clean, spacious and well organized. Very good looking and comfortable. Plenty closet space. Good running water pressure and excellent shower. Private WC. We were shown a non renovated suite and it was very well appointed too. Only issue with the rooms is that lightning, particularly in the bathroom and mirror is poor, so that women find this an issue while dressing up to go out.

- Reception and Concierge Services staff are very helpful too.

- Location: Hotel is a good 20 minute drive from Gustavia, the main town and where best restaurants are. But the other town, St Jean, plenty of stores, etc. its about 10 minutes. Best beach on Island (our opinion) L'Saline, is also maybe a 12 minute drive. St Jean also has a nice beach, but is more crowed and forget about Nikki beach, where you could get beach chairs and have lunch at St jean Beach: its crazy crowed and tightly packed.

- If you rent car through hotel partner, airport-hotel trip is included and it does make both renting and returning easier.

Overall, considering that the entire Island is crazy pricy and when you go, you simply have to try to forget dollar conversion, this hotel is definitively worth it: you get much much more than you would think when you compare prices to the other good hotels on the island.

Room Tip: Some rooms are right over the main walking area and not very secluded. 119 and those close are a li...

Very well located, very comtemporary, great service, wonderful view and pool. The rooms are very confortable with all the possible amenities.
The restaurants are just in front of the sea, good food and service.
Free wi-fi in anyplace helps a lot.
It's really a charming hotel in a charming island.

Room Tip: All the rooms are in front of the pool and the ocean. Some of them still have traditional furniture...
