We just spent 1 week on a neat little island in the Carribean. If you like to vacation and relax without all the other tourists on a beautiful island, you've got to go. Our primary focus on our vacations is to dive, so we hooked up with Troy (and wife Melody) at the Green Monkey Inn and Dive Shop. What a great week!!! Troy took my husband and I on some fantastic dives! All dives where boat dives on reefs that were amazing since there isn't alot of dive traffic down there. Millions of fish, all types. We even had sea turtles come check us out, many rays of all sizes, schools of squid, I could just go on. Troy was the best dive host we've ever delt with. I get sea sick something awful and he navigated that boat to try and keep me as comfortable as possible, even when I was taking pictures he would slow down and try to get the best views for us. I can't say enough about his service and work ethic. There was another dive operation on the island, but Troy has a bigger and nicer boat, and knows what he is doing! Go Green Monkey!
Since there's not a lot of tourism on the island, we hit a few little places to eat that were fun. We even got to spend time going out to dinner with Troy and Melody which made us feel very welcome and right at home. They even gave us suggestions about where to eat and on what nights since places are only open a few nights a week. They even suggested we go to Woodlands beach an Midnight to watch a sea turtles come up and lay her eggs. What a once in a lifetime thrill! She was huge, and how cool was that!!?!!!
We stayed at a villa called Bunkum Beach Guest House operated by Sun Smith. We would highly recommend this property. Very clean and beautiful, and very affordable. What a view!!!! Sun picked us up at the airport and dropped us off. What a nice survice she runs.
Everyone on this island was very nice to us. Very safe, literally no crime. One local was almost offended when we locked our car doors! All local restaraunt owners were very nice (service is a little slower on the island) and very friendly. Don't go for the sea food - not much to be had other than conch water, which was very good. They like to eat chicken on Montserrat! Lots of chicken. Everyone would talk to us and ask us how we liked visiting Montserrat. All the business owners we talked with all complimented each other, and it felt like they just wanted us to have a wonderful vacation on their island.
We did hike a little through some rain forest, and we did go see the volcano at the observatory. Troy was able to give us a much better tour by boat. He took us right past the old capital city of Plymouth that was deystroyed by the volcano. What a cool trip!
So if you want a place to stay, try Bunkum Beach, if you want a fantastik dive vacation find --- (Green Monkey Inn and Dive Shop) There are only about 4500 people left on the island, so it is very relaxing. Completely different than a St. Martin, St. Lucia or Antigua, no traffic, no huslte and bustle!
