“The Caribbean As It Used To Be”

Montserrat is lovely, quiet, friendly, interesting and romantic. Our trip was part of an anniversary celebration. We agonized over where we would stay, because we are usually resort hotel people, and there are none in Montserrat. We selected Bunkum Beach Guest House because of the reviews and because it is near the governor's residence (strange reason). We found a gem! From the moment Sun met us at the airport with our rental car and a couple of days' provisions for the fridge, we knew she was something special. The guest house is charming, clean and comfortable with spectacular views and the music of tree frogs to lull you to sleep at night. The first day or two we shared the villa with an interesting man from California, and the rest of the week we had the place to ourselves. Sun was the perfect host, very helpful but unobtrusive, coming in to check on us daily and making sure everything was right. Our rental car was Sun's personal vehicle (very uncomplicated rental procedure), and we used it to explore pretty much every square mile of the island. We are so glad we visited Montserrat and hope to return. If we do, Bunkum Beach Guest House is the only place we will stay!

Room Tip: All 3 of the rooms are excellent.

“The only place to stay in Montserrat”

Stayed here for 7nights during my trip to Montserrat for the Volcano Half Marathon - what a great stay. I'm not one for words & everything was so perfect about this guesthouse it would be easy to get carried away. Sun - the host who became more of friend, couldn't do enough to make my stay as cosy as possible. Combine this with her outstanding guesthouse (and very reasonable rates) & you easily have the best digs in Montsterrat!

“fascinating escape destination”

located on Palm Loop facing Nevis in the distance, and perched about 15m above the sea, this ideal setting offers the sea's roar, a small beach less than 5 minutes' walk away, and grounds alive with birds. Palm Loom is the best early morning walk with at least ten different species visible daily; from the sea cliff one secures downward looks at brown boobies, brown pelicans, and sometimes a bit off shore the white-tailed tropicbird and magnificent frigatebird. on the property's gardens are many bananaquits, American kestrels, green herons, Antillean crested hummingbird and the green-throated carib.
the room was super: comfortable, clean and with the sounds of the birds, frogs and sea. having a kitchen is a real plus for early breakfasts before heading to the trails. on the oriole trail [about 15 minutes' walk away] one soon finds the rare endemic Montserrat oriole. each hiking trail around the island offers stunning views and different ecologies. we've already booked another 8 days for january 2012.

Room Tip: clear from the website; only 3 exist. there's internet, but i don't know what fits 'high...

“Wonderful guest house on an amazing island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2011

If you're planning a trip to Montserrat (and you really should), then I strongly recommend you consider this guest house. It has a wonderful cliff top location, nice pool, fully equipped kitchen, large gardens, iguanas that you can hand feed and a lovely host, Sun.

We took the larger bedroom and had the villa to ourselves the first week and a half. For our remaining week, the other rooms where occupied by two friendly botanists from Kew gardens there to study the rain forests plants.

Sun, worked hard (despite the heat) to keep the place clean, bringing fresh flowers every few days. She was happy to engage in discussions about life on the island and proved an invaluable source of information to ensure we got the best from our time there.

Sun also provides a lift to and from the airport and took us shopping on arrival as well as arranging a hire car and boat trip for us. Her guest house is a home away from home and we will certainly be back.

Without any doubt, this trip was our best holiday in a decade. Montserrat is a wonderful place, friendly, peaceful and entirely recommended, as is Bunkum Bay guest house.

“Best vacation in years!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2010

My Husband and I stayed at Bunkum Beach for 2 weeks this past spring and it was not nearly long enough! What a lovely guest house, clean and spacious with the most amazing ocean views, really special, ocean in front and mountains behind! Sun, the owner/host was just great, met us off the plane, organized a rental vehicle and driving license. She had shopped previously for us and gotten in some lovely local Roti so we didn't have to leave the guest house for two days! Just relaxed by the pool and in the garden with the tame iguanas and birds until the jet lag had worn off. And then we were off hiking and exploring this amazing little gem of an island.

Sun was great with helping us find the best hiking trails, beaches and the best times to view the volcano (from a safe distance!) And she was there for us a a moments notice if we needed anything. And although she was at our beck and call, she was very unobtrusive, we would often come home from a long hard day of laying on the beach to find our room had been cleaned top to bottom with fresh flowers, towels and often fruit left for us. We felt completely at home at this guest house, something which is not easily found at a lot of places.

It was lovely to have such a nice big kitchen to use when we didn't feel like going out and we used the BBQ out in the lovely courtyard a lot. Location was great and very quiet, slept better than at home! And wireless interent so I was able to keep tabs on work e-mail which was really convenient. We plan on going back next spring so maybe I should not make this review too good as we want to make sure Sun has room for us again!
