“This is no 4-star hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 April 2011

Let me start off by saying we were comfortable for the most part. But for a 4-star hotel, this one just didn't measure up. The food in the restaurant was terrible; the beach was rocky, the water seaweed-y; the tennis courts were pockmarked and cracked; there were no screens on the sliding doors which in and of itself is not terrible but since the island has a lot of mosquitos (and apparently a Dengue Fever epidemic) it would be advisable.

The first room we were shown had nothing in the minibar — not even a bottle of water. As my husband said, at a 4-star hotel, the towels should be better than those we have at home. These weren't.

There were people bothering you on the beach selling things. We kind of think that should be discouraged at a 4-star hotel. Lastly, the electricity went out 3 days in a row. While we realize it is not the fault of the hotel per se, the way they handled it was discouraging. No apologies, no concern, they didn't even inform us it was out, they provided no help. Hotels of supposed lesser quality had generators. Why didn't this 4-star hotel?

We stayed last year in Curaçao at a 3-star hotel that was head and shoulders above this one. Bakoua is ust not worth the price at all.

Room Tip: Stay on a high floor (there is no elevator)

“High class resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 March 2011

Stayed in one of the wings directly on the pleasant beach. More expensive, but worth it. Room was very clean and comfortable. Breakfasts were big (including eggs and pancakes cooked to order). Lunch at the beach hut was cheap and good. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was a bit expensive - generally ate at the good, reasonably-priced restaurants in the town a couple of blocks away. Clientele is mainly retired French couples - no wild parties. Fast, free Internet; allows VPN.

“Good Hotel........Wonderful Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 February 2011

This hotel has recently changed ownership. The new General Manager is charming and appears capable of handling the transition. This hotel is not cheap and some work needs to be done but the location is stunning. I would advise upgrading to a upper level beachfront room. The room is adequate and comfortable. Breakfast was really good, but dinner (in the la sirene restaurant) was over priced and the menu choice a bit limited. Walk to the marina next door, great choice and much cheaper food.
One member of reception (male) was grumpy, everyone else was helpful. I liked this hotel.....and so did Air France, they base their crews here for the overnight stopover.

“Oh dear, in real need of some management attention or just shutting down”

I can only guess that accor are planning to sell this brand as this hotel was woeful in so many respects. It started poorly with perhaps the rudest receptionist of my life telling us that we had to wait four hours beyond our check in time, without any apology or suggestion of what to do in the meantime. By the way, we both speak French very well so language was no barrier. The rooms are very tired, the staff relatively friendly but clearly poorly managed. The beach bar closes at 4pm. The surrounding town is close to becoming a slum and the nearest hotel has already closed. Driving out we found some great beaches, but very glad we are moving on to cap est. Spend your money elsewhere.
