“Time at Carayou”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2008

We arrived at Hotel Carayou and the bellhop took us to our room. Immediately after he left we looked around and decided we were not staying in that room for the following reasons; the walls needed a good coat of paint, the door seemed like it was broken into as the wood had that sort of roughness. The towels should have been white but were almost white. I telephoned the front desk and asked them to change the room. We were taken to another room which was much better. We still did not use the hotel towels because they looked dingy white. The hotel restaurant had buffet style meals. No fish or shellfish was ever there which was quite surprising as you would expect this being the Caribbean. We decided instead to eat at local restaurants where we got grilled fish and shellfish. The beach at Hotel Carayou is definitely nothing worth writing home about in fact you are not missing anything as it's quite small. You have to actually walk down some brick steps to get into the water which was off putting. Overall the rooms were clean but basic. It's somewhere one would stay for a weekend not for your whole Caribbean vacation.

“Clean but basic”

Very clean and spacious and for the price adequate. The "beach" isnt much to write home about and the water is very choppy there making it difficult to swim. Hotel staff can be a little grumpy and rude. Breakfast buffet is good. Good location.

“It is what it is.”

I find Martinique to be expensive... and of poor value. I had stayed the previous weekend at the Fregate Blue hotel which was charming in a "grandmother's cottage" sort of way... great people, great view but a little too close to nature for me (e.g. 2 mosquitoes in the room feasted on m ankles. This time I needed to find a more business-like hotel (i.e. Internet access)... a search of the web and tripadviser.com yielded an assortment of questionable properties unless you were willing to pay the high rates of the Sofitel. So I settled on this hotel as a compromise. The good news is there is optional WiFi Internet access but only in the lobby and the bar/restaurant (which are not air conditioned... not a problem this time of year but I have a finicky laptop that doesn't do well when over-heated. The facilities are basic... but comfortable enough... the staff were great. I forgot my purse in the lobby (after and online session) and they actually called me in my room to tell me they had my purse! Which made up for the fact that my room wasn't done by the time I retrned to my room at 2pm for 3 out of 4 days.

Aside from breakfast (which is included and is an extensive continental buffet) the food was inedible and expensive (e.g. 32 Euros for a buffet dinner at which I only ate a bowl of chili.) So... I hiked up to the nearby Sofitel which is beautiful and I had a lovely dinner... then had stomach problems for the next two days.

The hotel is near a little tourist village and that is a plus, if you don't have a car. There are restaurants there that aren't bad and a very good Italian Ice Cream place.

It would be good if Martinique could manage to provide a few more mid-range choices for a business hotel.

“Avoid Like the Plague”

This hotel is like butlins, we booked after realising that the the hotel we had origionally requested was closed for renovations (Kamila)

The hotel pictures are very deceptive so be warned

We arrived and the hotel staff were v friendly , given our key and a map to find our hotel room OURSELVES

Discovered the room was on the 3rd floor ( no lifts ) of a chalet type block in the hotel ( they are all chalet blocks not a hotel with lifts and corridors) . After struggling up the stairs with a heavy suitcase , the room was tiny , musty , and the bed was nearly on the floor once we sat on it.

Traipsed back to reception and requested to see another room , exact same sceanario, , this time left the luggage in reception , viewed the room paid a cancellation deposit and left.

Sofitel Bateau martinique is only up the road and accomodated us thank goodness

  • Liked — the staff in reception were very helpful in locating a new hotel for us
