“Breathtaking and unique”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2005

Habitation Lagrange is like a dream or an apparition: a meticulously restored 18th-century French plantation house located literally in the middle of a tropical rain forest. It will please anyone who has both a romantic imagination and a good-humored awareness of the fact that tropical rainforests are not immaculate environments created by Disney imagineers. It is amazing that the Habitation is as elegant as it is considering where it is located.

The road is indeed in terrible shape, but this is intentional (other secluded luxury properties on heavily cruised islands do this as well, like Anse Chastenet on St. Lucia). All you have to do is go up to Plantation Leyritz, Martinique's other beautiful plantation hotel to see why. As gorgeous as Leyritz is, the atmosphere is completely ruined during the day by buses from cruise ships, which can get there easily. A cruise bus cannot travel the road to Habitation Lagrange, so the wonderful, dream-like peace of the place is never disturbed. If the road were to be fixed, the hotel would be ruined, because it is certainly the most magical hotel and restaurant on the island and all of the cruise ships would want to make it a lunch or a drink stop. Don't worry though. They will not fix the road and a car traveling slowly and carefully can easily navigate it.

Habitation Lagrange is not where you should stay if you want a beach (you shouldn't stay on this whole side of the island if you want a beach because the Atlantic Coast does not offer many options for safe swimming). And you shouldn't stay here if you want to go out at night (it is not near the other tourist developments on the island, which is part of its point). But you will never forget the nights you spend here in the magnificent plantation house restaurant with superb Caribbean food prepared with subtlety to very high French standards, with the pool and luxuriant plantings gently illuminated, feeling the moist, mysterious presence of the rain forest and listening to the soft music of the tree frogs. This is one of the most unique places in the Caribbean and the kind of traveler who could appreciate it shouldn't dream of missing it.

“recommended but with reservations”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 February 2004

Over all I recommend Habitation Lagrange, having spent 8 days there in February 2004. It offers a beautiful experience of ?colonial living? of bygone days. There is a beautiful tropical garden with a nice pool (there is no view of the sea from the hotel though), the de-luxe rooms are spacious, equipped with wooden floors, four-poster bed, two wash-basins, separate shower and bath-tub and separate WC, there is a spacious balcony or front-porch to rest on in the dry during a tropical shower. The staff is very friendly. The excellent dinners (accompanied by fine French wines) are served in a splendid hall, lit by candles with ceiling-fans turning, a mural depicting colonial life and the classical music filling the hall just adding a tiny bit of decadence. As most guests used to stay away during the day we had the garden mostly to ourselves which we considered a definite asset and we anyway prefer a nice garden with pool to the beach. There are certain weak points to be considered as well though. The place seemingly struggles with the costs of upkeeping it in the prevailing tropical climate and environment. This means that while all the surfaces you get in direct contact with are clean, many surfaces which you will not actually have to touch (such as the undercarriage of the reclining chairs, seams between walls and ceilings, iron and wooden artwork) are falling prey to mould, rust and the tiny flora and fauna of the tropics. There is also some water damage to ceilings obviously due to leaks in the roofs. The hotel is somewhat isolated, about 1.2 km inland from the main coastal road and as nothing is within easy walking distance a car is highly recommended. The last 200 m of the road leading to the hotel are in a dismal state of (dis)repair though and I would not have liked to navigate it during a heavier downpour. While drinks are served all day round there are no snacks and the menue for lunch and dinner is the same (also as far as prices go) although you can of course just have a salad for lunch.A final warning to check one?s bill at the end as mine contained 98 Euros of miscalculations in the spreadsheets in which food and drink consumption had been gathered (out of correct 848,- or more than 10%). I attribute this to incompetence rather than malice but still would have been left with a solid overcharge had I not kept track of my spending and demanded to check the details.

“Bizarre, Beautiful but recommended!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2003

This beautiful old plantation is not for everyone. We stayed in June, off season admittedly, and were the only guests. This is apparently not unusual. We were given the best suite in the house ( quaint but comfortable, not to mention enormous!) and the chef prepared a fabulous lunch for us ( best food we had in Martinique) as they had no record of our reservation. Dinner was equally exquisite. For those who do not speak French, be warned! Most of the staff speak little or no English.
The pool area is gorgeous, as is the setting, and dining in the old plantation house is as romantic as it gets, in particular if you don't mind the odd frog or cat popping in or out. Perfect for a couple of nights, but I wouldn't recommend a longer stay.

“One of the kind experience”

If you want to experience the atmosphere of those colonial days in the French West Indies, then I would recommend Habitation LaGrange. I stayed at one of the deluxe rooms in the Planter's House. I loved the room with antique furniture and the spacious bathroom. So tranquil and timeless - I felt like I could stay there forever. The hotel staffs are very friendly and attentive. Meals are excellent, although a bit expensive. My advice:The hotel is in the tropical rainforest region. Be prepared for the agressive mosquitos. Don't worry. The hotel provides mosquito repel spray. Ask for one upon check-in.
