My wife and I concur with the generally enthusiastic comments about this hotel. The unbeatable location and views over the bay make it a wonderful get-away. The main house beautifully captures the ambiance of a more genteel era; sitting on the veranda with a drink makes everyday life seem a million miles away.
Laurent and Joelle are charming and helpful hosts, and the dinner we had was gourmet quality -- as in any fine restaurant, you put yourself in the hands of the chef and there is no chance of disappointment.
We traveled around most of Martinique during our stay and saw no other part of the island we would rather have chosen. In fact viewing some of the resorts in the Trois Islets area made us doubly certain we had made the right choice with Le Domaine St. Aubin.
As others have noted, the hotel is not for those who demand expensive soaps or other high-end amenities, and it certainly would not do for anyone who is looking for nightlife (other than the songs of assorted amphibians.) There is nothing to visit within walking distance except sugar cane fields.
I will repeat what others have noted -- you had better have at least some bad high school French to fall back on in Martinique. We found the people here quite warm and friendly and charitable toward our pathetic efforts to communicate. Roads are very good, and the grinding poverty found on some of the islands is not much in evidence here. It is important to remember that Martinique is not necessarily geared to the casual tourist or sun-worshiping beach goer, but rather to those who want to appreciate a unique culture with an interesting history and plenty of natural beauty.
I highly recommend this hotel as the antidote to a packaged resort stay. Merci Laurent et Joelle.
