“Unique Experience”

We stayed here for 4 nights in January 2011. If you are looking for a large American-style hotel, then this is not for you. However, if you value staying in a beautiful old house and eating excellent food then this is a good choice. It is not on a beach but is a place for relaxation and also has a good swimming pool.

This hotel is in a rural setting, so you will need a rental car to enjoy staying here - but this is probably true for all locations in Martinique. We found two good beaches, one quite close the other side of Tartane on the Caravelle peninsular and one further away at the Grand Anse de Macabou.

“Beautiful location but need your earplugs”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2011

Fantastic views from our 'category A' room. The owner was very helpful and speaks excellent English (a rarity in Martinique). Unfortunately walls between rooms are not very soundproof so woken at 5am each morning by next door taking a shower. Then Friday night disco meant no sleep at all. If you are not a light sleeper then I would recommen it but avoid the meals which are over-priced.

“Magnificent place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2011

My wife and I concur with the generally enthusiastic comments about this hotel. The unbeatable location and views over the bay make it a wonderful get-away. The main house beautifully captures the ambiance of a more genteel era; sitting on the veranda with a drink makes everyday life seem a million miles away.

Laurent and Joelle are charming and helpful hosts, and the dinner we had was gourmet quality -- as in any fine restaurant, you put yourself in the hands of the chef and there is no chance of disappointment.

We traveled around most of Martinique during our stay and saw no other part of the island we would rather have chosen. In fact viewing some of the resorts in the Trois Islets area made us doubly certain we had made the right choice with Le Domaine St. Aubin.

As others have noted, the hotel is not for those who demand expensive soaps or other high-end amenities, and it certainly would not do for anyone who is looking for nightlife (other than the songs of assorted amphibians.) There is nothing to visit within walking distance except sugar cane fields.

I will repeat what others have noted -- you had better have at least some bad high school French to fall back on in Martinique. We found the people here quite warm and friendly and charitable toward our pathetic efforts to communicate. Roads are very good, and the grinding poverty found on some of the islands is not much in evidence here. It is important to remember that Martinique is not necessarily geared to the casual tourist or sun-worshiping beach goer, but rather to those who want to appreciate a unique culture with an interesting history and plenty of natural beauty.

I highly recommend this hotel as the antidote to a packaged resort stay. Merci Laurent et Joelle.

“An idyllic location with a great fin de siècle feel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2011

We have just finished a wonderful 10 day stay at the domaine, here in Martinique. It's a great early 20th century house with 30 rooms spread across the house and newer and better apartment type rooms. The morning views are breathtaking from the large balconies. The surprising thing is that it is unbelievably quiet all day and in the evenings, twice we were the only people having dinner in the wonderful dining room with very good food indeed prepared by a young local chef. It's close to the presque isle of Caravelle which has the best beaches on the island also very quiet with good restaurants.
I would however recommend a few changes, open the bar during the day so we can get drinks on an honour bar basis in the day and early evening before the dinner service starts. Update some of the rooms in the main house and most importantly get the lady of the house out front more often, she gives great advice and is great fun too.

Overall, we were very sorry to have left and plan to be back as soon as we can.

“quaint and comfortable, yet not much to do in surrounding area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2011

Great swimming pool and views of banana plantation and ocean near by. 1 hour drive to Ft de France, not much to do in surrounding areas, little to no restaurants nearby, so you are pretty remote. Relaxing stay, very comfortable bed, air conditioned.
Beautiful antiques in main part of hotel, very quaint looking. Rooms are fresh and clean.
