Found Wild Palms on the Internet. It was one of very few who were willing to book for one night only. Because we were so late in planning however, we were unable to get a rental car, which is the gospel when traveling to Vieques. Paul, the owner of Wild Palms, offered to pick us up at the airport. He was there just as we landed, and turned out to be an interesting and very generous guy who, to fund his semi-retirement, rents out rooms at his own home.
Our room was very, very simple, but quiet and clean. Had a separate entrance w/ a sturdy lock, screened windows, two comfortable beds, and a small kitchenette. No drills, but certainly satisfactory. Paul knew we had kids so decided to capture one of the many wild iguanas roaming the island in advance of our arrival, so that our kids could see it up close. They really appreciated it (although wanted to know the poor lizard would be released, which Paul promised). He also has turtles and chickens (and roosters that serve as unwelcome alarm clocks; but that's not his fault!).
We went solely to experience the bio-luminescent bay, and Paul was even kind enough to drop us at their pick up point, on the other side of the island (his daughter owns to boat company that takes you to the bay!). Later that night, when our taxi never showed. Paul got out o bed and came and fetched us! He said the road construction and gas shortage were making traversing the island a nightmare for many, so it was extra kind of him to help us out so much.
This is not a place to stay for long periods; there's little to do and without a car, it's not that near the beach, but it's perfectly fine for any budget traveler looking for an at home experience.
