I wish I read the latest reviews before booking. Guess it used to be a nice place. Now it's falling apart. Gotta love the car seats in the lobby that came from a pick up truck. I will say the AC worked, the sheets were sort of clean, shower was decent, had hot water, was only $75/night. But it needs a lot of work. Guy that runs it was very nice and helpful, but I don't think he cares about the place anymore. Thank god I didnt see bugs, it looks like they were hiding somewhere.

Casa Alta Vista has seen better days. What once seemed like it was a nice hotel is now for sale and is crumbling around the edges. Reviews on Trip Advisor led me to believe I would be staying in a cheap, but otherwise comfortable hotel, but there were many aspects of the stay that were unacceptable, even in the cheapest of hotels. While the owner was very nice, here were some of the issues we had:

- Moldy ceiling made of tin. When it rained it sounded like gunfire and woke us up in the middle of the night.
- Dirt and mold on other parts of the room--mold on the fridge and big scuffs on the walls. Dirt piled up in corners of the room
- TV in the room did not work. Wifi that worked at a snail's pace.
- Multiple spots of dried blood on our sheets.
- No on-site staff to enforce hotel rules--like when a local family with visiting relatives who were staying in the hotel, were having a party on the roof that involved playing instruments until 12am on a Tuesday night.
- Air conditioner worked intermittently.

Bottom line: Do NOT stay here. There are similarly priced alternatives in Esperanza proper which are in much better shape.

We had a lovely time on Vieques. Casa Alta Vista is a short walk to the beautiful beaches and nearby small grocery, the malacon, and restaurants etc. The place is basic, but very comfortable, if you are looking for a resort type place go somewhere else. If you like a good value, this is it. We had the apt, with a full kitchen and were able to eat/prepare meals etc. which was great when traveling with kids. We also did not rent a car/none were available but managed quite nicely without one because of the great location. The owner, Mark was a great resource and guided us to all the best spots and has some amazing stories about the island as well. Hope to go back one day!!

I would love to give a better review but want to advise people to look around first for other newer/cleaner options within the same price point. We paid $75/night for two. I learned after that there are other guest houses near by starting at $85.

The location is a short walk from the strip which is great and a short walk a beach.

The owner Mark is very friendly and knowledgeable and we really appreciated his tips of what to see on the island.

He has the place up for sale and not having stayed there prior I would guess he is ready to move on. He is not on site much but can be reached by cell phone (which we did not bring travelling)...

The wifi is patching and has to be requested.

Our room was ok but the furniture is dated, there wasn't any soap/shampoo filled in the dispenser in the shower so bring some. The TV didn't really work which was ok for us as there is alot to do near by and the weather was great for us.

The room was not refreshed during our stay. I would have loved a broom to sweep up the sand that collected.... as well everything seems to have a layer of dirt on it, need a good scrubbing!

The sheets seemed clean and the A/C worked.
