We traveled to Vieques the week of Christmas 2011 for a family reunion and stayed at the magical La Finca. If you like the natural world and a friendly, camp-like atmosphere, I can't recommend this place highly enough. Go. As soon as you can.
Upon stepping through La Finca's entrance gate (intended to keep wild horses out, security is not an issue at all), the flow of thoughts in my brain paused, leaving behind a welcome quiet. Taking in the lush, cared-for grounds for the first time was like one long, slow exhale. Banana, palm, starfruit and mango trees greeted us ~ these were a sensory delight and an educational highlight for many of the cousins, ages 6-17. We stayed in the guest house, which has six bedrooms on the 2nd floor that rent individually most of the time (renters share the 1st floor). Large groups can rent the entire building as a private house, as we did. The 1st floor sports wraparound decks with plentiful hammocks and porch swings, with options for views & sun exposure; a serviceable open kitchen/dining/living room with two refrigerators and cubbies designated for each room to keep food separate; and a 1/2 bath. There's a large picnic table on the 1st floor porch facing south (with beautiful views of the Carribbean about 2 mile away) where our group ate meals.
Highlights: very clean saltwater tiled pool; mangoes that ripened perfectly after 6 days; semi-private "yoga" deck upstairs with even better views of the ocean; knowledgeable advice from Bill & Corky; sunny and 80 every day with 1-5 minute bursts of rain, usually at night; 50 (!) beaches circling Vieques, all apparently pristine, barely used, with endless variety of size, sand, wave action and snorkeling possibilities; Biobay tour; great street food options; cheap groceries with items fairly in line with what we'd expect from our local grocery stores; friendly, laid-back locals with a vibrant Latin culture.
There was no downside to our trip. I gave 4 out of 5 stars for Cleanliness only because travelers should expect camp-level cleanliness, not hotel sterility. If you stay in the guest house, your experience will depend a lot on the other guests, because sound travels in the plywood palace. Our group synced on sleep routines so this wasn't an issue for us.
Most important to the high quality of our experience, owner/caretakers Bill and Corky were helpful, friendly, fun and available and still gave us our space. They work really hard, and it shows in the well-maintained facilities and beautiful grounds.
