“Your own private rainforest escape”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Relax. Breathe in. Listen. Be grateful. That essentially sums up our first night at the Rainforest Inn. Honestly, our entire stay with Bill and Laurie reflected those six simple words.

Our somewhat premature arrival was met with nothing but a smile and validation that we followed the directions properly - "glad you found us." Bill warmly greeted us (thoughtfully sans handshake given his cold), introduced his wife Laurie and showed us to our spacious quarters above the main building. We counted the minutes to our welcome piña colada and were not disappointed.

Once settled, we scouted the property - taking in the views and delighting in the flora that enveloped the Inn. Bill provided us with "safe to eat" recommendations at the kioskos (we enjoyed the incredible ceviche at Tapas 13) along the beach in Luquillo and off we went winding our way down the hills of El Yunque.

Falling asleep to the sounds of a rainforest were new to us both. Candidly, I can't wait to return and feel the cool evening breeze blow through the room as the coqui sing their song. Breakfast is not to be missed at the Rainforest Inn. For those desiring (needing?) coffee in the morning, we suggest you make it in your room and bring it to breakfast.

We hiked the great tree..... Trail in the forest and headed for the last outpost of food in El Yunque. We found a quaint, nearly open air kitchen (Yuquiyu Delights) producing traditional Puerto Rican fare that was satisfying and affordable. Laurie happened to be at the restaurant and accepted our invitation to share lunch. We learned much of her history, the energy devoted to resurrecting (and maintaining) the Rainforest Inn property and the evolving story of Puerto Rico.

An open mind and an open heart will often find their equal. Visit the Rainforest Inn with both and you will experience a mountain side treasure.

“Rainforest Inn trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

We stayed 2 times at the Rainforest Inn. Both times were very enjoyable and would highly recommend the Inn. The breakfasts were terrific, listening to the jungle was exceptional. Keep up the great hospitality. Sharon and Pat M

Room Tip: We enjoyed cooking our meals.

“it was a great place to stay right before our wedding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

my wife and I got married on the beach in Luquillo. The rainforest inn was a great place for us to spend a couple nights before the wedding to de-stress. The views are great. It's really IN the rainforest, so it is like you are in a different world. I can't wait to go back some day.

“Nice Place, Disappointed in the way we were treated!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

Visiting Puerto Rico, the Rainforest Inn was what I was excited about the most. We were travelling around the Island staying at different places. We wanted to see different unique places and this was what I was looking forward to the most. When we booked there was only one night vacant to stay but still we were excited about having at least one night at the Rainforest Inn. However, we were overall disappointed. As two other trip advisor reviews mentioned: “Bill tries to be personable but only manages to come off as condescending.” Let me explain why:

First off, I was traveling with my girlfriend and we are mid to late 20’s couple. I travel a lot, especially in the Caribbean.

Pro’s: beautiful location in the rainforest. Something you don’t get to experience every day. Room was nice, breakfast was good

Cons: The reason I say that this was a disappointing stay was mainly because the way we were treated by Bill, the owner. Since we were only there one night, it seemed as if we were not important guest, that we didn’t spend enough money with him to be a valued guest. Or maybe he just thought we were some young college student kids since we look young. I don’t know. but let me give you a couple examples of why I felt this way.

1. I emailed Bill after booking in advance and said that were only fortunate enough to book one night since there was no more availability. I asked if we could come before 4pm (earliest check-in time) to hike and enjoy the property. He said No, that him and his wife had stuff to do and prepare so that 4 was the earlier time to arrive. This was disappointing but not a huge deal, we figured we could just get up and hike in the morning.

However, after breakfast we asked where the trails were on his property to hike. Bill seemed almost in a pushy mood for us to leave. Almost like we had overstayed our welcome and this was at 930 am. I came to this B&B because of its location and because of the access to some private hiking and beautiful scenery. However he said it would be to muddy and to hike the trails because it had rained in the rainforest(It rains in the rainforest?). He was worried about us being muddy and not having a place to clean up. I guess I was out of line thinking that the place we paid to spend the night at would want/allow us to clean up at. I’m not sure what time check out time was, but apparently it was 930am, or when Bill was ready for us to leave. Bill suggested things for us to do which was nice, but it seemed to be ploy to get us off his property. Just the way it came off to us.

2. Prior to arriving we called Bill to let him know we were running late, since we were not allowed to hike his property before 4 we decided to go zip lining and utilize the day the most we could. However, zip lining took a lot longer than expected so we wanted to call and let Bill know that we would be running late that it would be around 9pm before we arrived. He said ok, and told us there would be a 30 dollar late fee for arriving after 9.

We got lost trying to find his place in the dark, no easy task FYI. We called him as we were lost to get better directions, so he knew we were trying to find his house for a good while. We arrived in his driveway and when Bill showed us our room I checked my watch. 9:11pm. He charged us 30 dollars for being less than 11 minutes late. I can tell you that is not customer service. 11 minutes? Bill is cheap and was only worried about his pockets, not 2 guest that were only spending 160 bucks for 1 night.

There were a couple other things said/done that made us feel unwelcome but I hope you get the point. I can tell you that this place is a very nice place and is perfect for you if want a peaceful “green” getaway, we had no problem with the physical place, just the management. I did think it was funny that they have no TV’s or A/C because they want the guest to be able to enjoy the natural environment; however, they have free Wi-Fi. But I had no problem with that. I can also tell you that Bill did suggest a trail outside of his property that we hiked which was at a beach about 20 minutes away, it was a great hike and wouldn’t have known about it if it wasn’t for Bill, so that I do appreciate that. 190 bucks for directions to a beach off of his property? That’s the way we felt after leaving, that we weren’t valued customers.

WILLIAM HUMPHREY, Owner at Rainforest Inn, responded to this review

It’s hard sometimes to remain objective when a review is so personal. It must be how it feels when an actor receives a scathing review for a part in his play. I’m glad at least these guests liked the quiet beauty of our place, and saddened that they felt unappreciated. As always, Laurie and I like most reviews which let our future guests know what to expect here, so I will concentrate on those points:
1. We don’t have a TV set in the rooms nor air-conditioning and there is no swimming pool. Our WIFI is there because it is essential for guests to remain in touch with business and home. The computer and printer is there for guests to print boarding passes or to research their next adventure.
2. Our hikes are real rainforest hikes which are sometimes a little too adventurous for some and we have learned to be clear in describing what a jungle hike is like so that no one gets lost or possibly injured and spoils their vacation. We also have to make sure that our guests don’t go into the jungle without proper hiking shoes and long pants. There are plenty of other hikes we can suggest which have clearly marked paved trails that can be hiked in flip-flops and shorts.
3. Our three-night minimum helps define a nature experience with hikes, excursions like tandem hang-gliding, horse back riding on the beach, bio-bay kayaking, eating at the “Luquillo Kioskos” and many other nearby attractions, which would be impossible to appreciate when just staying one night.
4. Our guests who print out the simple directions we email significantly reduce their chance of getting lost.
Checkout is eleven a.m. and we always allow guests to stay longer on the property if they wish. We have an extra bathroom where they can cleanup from our muddy hike. When my wife and I aren’t out getting supplies or still cleaning the rooms we can sometimes allow early check-ins. I’ve explored every inch of the rainforest and in my thirty-five years of living here I know of some secret natural hideaways which it always gives me pleasure to share with you. Sometimes I have to suggest an easier hike especially when we’ve had excessive rains and we realize that as responsible guesthouse owners we can’t send someone out to ford slippery ravines and push through dense growth, unprepared. I’ll be your resident concierge while you stay here and if you think I’m condescending I promise it’s not because I don’t appreciate you, it may only be because of my own scientific upbringing which many others have commented on. I do love being an innkeeper and meeting incredible guests from all walks of life – it’s my main reason for being an innkeeper. And I’m also glad I never became an actor.

Thank you for considering a stay with us,
Bill & Laurie

“Be At Home in the Rainforest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 December 2011

After reading the many great reviews, My wife and I booked 3 nights prior to our recent cruise out of San Juan. It was a great choice! Even though we were there during some intense rains (finding out why it's called a rainforest) we could not have been more comfortable. We were at home with Laurie and Bill and the one other group of guests (there are only two rooms that are rented), sitting around the gourmet breakfast table trading reviews of great places to visit and dine. We had the downstairs Villa and felt like we lived there enjoying the surrounding gardens and view down the hills and out to the ocean. Way too rainy during our stay for the private treks others have raved about, but we enjoyed the adjoining El Yunque Forest and the great local dining in Luquillo. Probably not for those used to the same-old hotel experience, but if you want to feel like you're arrived at your second-home hideaway, lovingly cared for you during your absence by Laurie and Bill, this is the place.
