“Great check in experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We had a two night reservation while traveling between Ponce and Isla Verdi. The desk clerk was very helpful. They had already upgraded us because of platnum priority clup status, but he went one step further and upgraded us again to a two room suite. Very nice. The room did have a slight musty odor to it. I have come to expect that in this climate. I think the hotels in this area exist for the sake of the casinos. I am not much of a gambler so we spent the afternoon getting to know the area. We traveled to Rincon beach, Rincon light house, and Sandy Beach. None of which were very impressive. In fact we decided that we were wasting vacation time on this end of the island. We decided to add a night to our next reservation at the Intercontinental, and leave Mayaguez early. I booked this hotel with points and thought I would rather loose them than the day wasted with little to do. I talked to the desk clerk and let them know that we would not need the room for the next night and they were very pleasant about it. They even suggested that if I called Priority Club that I might be able to get the points credited back to my account. I did call and it worked out fine. The points for the next night were credited back to my account. Overall the hotel is nice enough. If you are entertained by gambling this would be a good place to stay. If you like the beach, don't waste time with anything but the north east end of Puerto Rico.

Room Tip: Room 400 is a nice two room suite. I would imagine that is also true for 500 and 600. Be nice to the...

“A Good Bet in this Area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

This property is another example of what the Holiday Inn chain has accomplished in recent years. In addition to adding numerous new properties to their inventory, they have invested a great deal into updating old ones......refreshing or selling worn out properties. I've been staying in Holiday Inns since the 60s when they were all new.......and have watched them "die" and then "come back to life". This property in Mayaguez is probably a good example of their renewal program. From the outside the building looks like an old Soviet era apartment building. We had been looking for a place to stay for the night in Western Puerto Rico .....we looked at a few island-chain and local independent properties and were uninspired.....so went ahead and depended on experience over hope and booked this hotel. Once inside, a sort of dread was replaced with a bit of a "wow". The building design is old....but the lobby has a fresh and clean look, notwithstanding its juxtaposition with a casino....not a plus in my view. The front desk staff were very friendly, promptly announced that we had been upgraded to a Suite......instructed me on free parking, internet use (good high speed by the way), complimentary breakfast, etc and we were on our way to a fifth floor one bedroom suite. The elevator was clean.....the carpets in the hallways appeared to be new and the hallways looked fresh. In this case I wasn't interested in any recreation or views......I was interested in a comfortable room. Flat screen TVs, hot water.......spacious quarters......nice work area.....very efficient AC (newer incremental units)......despite an obviously older design of building this chain has made the best of what they have and turned it into a good value hotel. There is a very nice and reasonably priced restaurant in the ground floor......we had a very good dinner, nicely prepared and served at a very reasonable price which added to our sense of value. This hotel delivers a very good product at a very competitive price. If you're looking for a safe, clean, comfortable lodging for a night, this is a good choice in Mayaguez.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor to escape the casino noise/crowd.

“Acceptable choice for the area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

No sea-views from this hotel, but it's an OK choice for an overnight in Mayaguez. Also not near the center of town, but near the airport. Has a casino if that is any interest to you. It's an older property, but looks to have been kept updated. It was clean & acceptable. Nothing to be impressed with, but it should serve your needs, Don't expect a resort atmosphere, because that is NOT this hotel. Staff were courteous, polite & helpful. Did not try the restaurant, & the only bar is inside the casino (Fat Tuesdays chain).

Room Tip: High floor rooms probably more quiet. Odd numbers overlook casino roof & highway. Even numbers o...

“Not one of the best Holiday Inns out there.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2011 via mobile

We have stayed at the Holiday Inn located in Ponce many times and it is great. However, this one in Mayaguez is not one of their best locations. The rooms are very clean, but they need some renovation. The rooms are NOT worth the $140 we payed for the
night. Our room did not even had a safe, which is standard in every hotel. I would not recommended.

“A great place to sleep at west side of Island”

No matter what trip, family, business, romance, I always find this hotel a great place. The room is excellent, they have king and double rooms with lcd tvs, big bathrooms, great a/c, clean carpets. Its a great place, about the pool, its a little one, no view to beach or any interesting. If you stay a Friday or Saturday, please get in before 6pm or you will have to return after 11pm (parking its a small one), there's a Casino on 1st floor and I think all people in town go there on weekends. I stayed there two times on Thanksgiving weekend, one business trip and about three times on Christmas season. Great service, front desk, restaurant, great breakfast either buffet or 'a la carta'. They have a mini disco bar, great for a beer or some exotic drink, great music system (too loud for me). I can recommend this place over other hotels in the area. Another thing, there's a gas station about 5 minutes from there in car with pizza, chicken, hot dogs and all type of snacks.

Room Tip: You need to be member of Holiday Inn frequent travel program to get a room at 4th or 5th floor. Alwa...
