“The Resort Thing, Done Pretty Well”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We spent a very long weekend in Puerto Rico, and we liked the look of the reviews for La Concha, so we gave it a try. On the whole, it was a pretty nice experience. The hotel services were good, but I didn't find them to be quite up to the Marriott standard--still, no dealbreakers there. The only thing that stands out in my mind was a sliding mirror door that absolutely would not stay on its track, but to be fair, we never called the desk about it, so I'll give them a pass.

The hotel was certainly a haven for partying and for the posh crowd, and we really didn't fit either of those descriptions. (Our days mainly consisted of outdoor adventures--OSJ, El Yunque, etc.) Still, the non-food service staff were very nice. If you're big into the club scene, this place is definitely for you, and even if not, don't necessarily pass it up.

The beach access, pools, hot tubs, and outdoor furniture were all awesome. The bar service was expensive, but that was completely expected. The food, however, was humdrum for great prices. The only outstanding thing was the sushi, but that's more for another review. The foodservice staff was often unattentive, once going on break for about twenty minutes just as we had finished our meal and were waiting on the check.

It's a beautiful hotel in a great location. We won't be coming back--just because there are probably places that suit our tastes and interests better. If you want a lavish beach hotel or a hot dancing/drinking spot, you won't be disappointed.

“Get the Ocean View Room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We just got back from San Juan and stayed at this property for three day before a cruise. We had reserved a two queen bed ocean view for four guests. When we arived we were told all that was available was a King ocean view. They offered to upgrade us to a pool view room in the Tower (this made a private pool area, breakfast and happy hour available for our use). The room was great, for two or three people. The bedroom had a king size bed, but the sofa bed wasn't even a 3/4 size. a bit small for two adults. We spent the first night there and then asked to be moved. We were then given a two bed (doubles) suite with a sofa bed. It was a street view, be aware that people party hard on Friday and Saturday night in San Juan. The bathroom was gorgeous, lots of glass and wood and marble, A great place for a couple, but unless you like being observed as you shower, not so great for two couples sharing a room. Staff was helpful, public rooms great, breakfast and happy hour (honor bar) a nice addition. Used points for the room so can't complain about the price.

Room Tip: If you can get a tower ocian view, go for it. Do not let them put you in a street side room.

“Good, hip resort in the middle of San Juan”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

La Concha is a very hip, happening resort in the Condado district of San Juan that strives, and mostly succeeds, at providing top-notch service and atmosphere. I just returned from a five day stay and had a very nice time.

Here's what's great about it: 1. The service - extremely helpful and courteous staff from the management to the front desk to the bellman to the waitstaff in the restaurants. To give two examples, I was concerned about the noise after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor since I was traveling with my dad who is not in the best of health. I contacted the hotel's guest services manager and he blocked rooms on higher floors in the back of the hotel so the noise wouldn't be an issue. That made a huge difference. Also, Linette at the front desk booked a rainforest tour to El Yunque for us with a guide who was fantastic. 2. The food - not cheap, but excellent, esp at Voga. 3. The decor - the rooms in the tower have been recently renovated and have a modern-chic vibe to them (white, turquoise, chartreuse) as does the hotel overall. 4. The convenience- to the airport, Old San Juan, the East Coast, not to mention it's within walking distance to lots of restaurants in the neighborhood and a Walgreen's where we got milk, juice and cereal for our breakfasts.

Here are some things to think about when choosing this property: 1. It's more for couples than families, at least those with little kids, in my opinion. If you go with small children, you wan't feel out of place and you'll have a good time, i went with my 9 year old and extended family and he loved it. But with all the chic decor, the house music in the hallways and elevator, and the bar/nightclub in the lobby, it's just more for adults. Plus, the pools are small and there isn't one that is super-geared for kids with a cool slide or wading area. 2. The beach is a small strip of urban sand surrounded by high-rises, and it's too dangerous to swim there, anyway. A local person literally begged me not to go swimming there, saying it was much safer further down the beach around the bend. If you are going to PR for the beach, this isn't the property for you. 3. This is a nice property but not a spectacular one (like the St. Regis Monarch Beach in CA or the Ritz in Naples FL, two of my all time fave places). Then again, it's probably 40-50% of the cost of those places so the small trade-offs are worthwhile.

Overall, I liked La Concha a lot. There is a lot to recommend it and if you want a few days by the pool with your honey I certainly think this would be a good choice.

Room Tip: You definitely need a room in the new wing, on a high floor, in the back or on the side. I was on th...

“Nice spot right on the beach.”

We were able to stay here after getting bumped when the Doubletree was overbooked. Beautiful view of the beach from our room (I think all rooms have ocean views.). Very modern style. We enjoyed the pools and beach in front of the hotel and used the large fitness facilities. Great location too. Only a $15 cab ride to Old San Juan or the airport.

“Modern and friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

My husband and I just returned from a business/pleasure trip to Puerto Rico. The hotel was chosen for us by our business group. It was wonderful! The rooms are so large and modern. The food at the hotel is pretty pricey but very good. You can go right down the street to the store and pick up anything you need to stock your kitchen (mini-apartment) if you are really budget-minded. There were a fair amount of children there but I would have to say that the hotel is geared more towards adults. We were in a part of the hotel that is only serviced by two elevators so sometimes it was a little slow. Even though the hotel was completely booked while we were there it never felt really crowded. The beach itself I thought was so-so. The waves crash in pretty heavily and it is noisy and hard to enjoy the swimming in the ocean. Our room had a jacuzzi tub but it did not work. I didn't call about it because it wasn't that important to me. I think the best part of the hotel was the friendly staff and the doormen. Felix and Neff were wonderful! They offered so much good advice and took the time to say hello and smile each time you entered the hotel!
