“All is Well...”

After a 7 day cruise, we stayed at the S&J Suites. I won't tell you the things that the other travelers have told you already. What I will tell you is that San Juan has many hotels, and most are 2 to 3 times the money. This hotel was in one of the best locations... San Juan is known as "the walkable city", and this hotel makes that possible. Yes, it is an older property, which means that it is not like the Sheraton down the street. But, it is clean, and has everything that you want. Ramone is one of the hotel assets. He is such a personable and friendly front desk manager, and is knowledgable of his city. He will do everything he can to accomodate you. I will tell you that we SO appreciated the willingness of the hotel to store our baggage ( we had quite a bit) until check in time. The hotel also did the same after check out, and called a cab for us to the airport. To be able to know your luggage can be stored in a secure location for free.... that is a great accomodation. Ramone also told us to go to the Barachinna ( sp?) 3 blocks down the street. It is the birthplace of the Pina Colada. You HAVE to go and try one.... even though my husband does not like coconut, he LOVED this one!!! It truly was the best I have ever tasted... all on Ramone's reccommendation. Also, there is a small cafe up one street and across from the Pidgeon Park... Cafeteria Mallorca. There is even a letter on the wall from Samantha Brown when she was traveling to San Juan... she reccommends it!! Do not be put off by the look of the cafe... the food is good. It is where the locals dine. All in all, the hotel is one that I would come back to.... there is more to a hotel than just it's looks.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back... this will insure that you are away from any noise.

“Perfect location and excellent service”

Upon arrival, Raymond, who was extremely helpful with orientating us to the city, met us. He provided us with a map, lots of information about what to see, where to eat, and how to get around the city. The hotel is centrally located in Old San Juan, within walking distance to all of the attractions. Our room was on the back of the hotel, so it was quiet. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. At check out, Raymond stored our luggage for us so we could tour more of the city before we left. I would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Because this hotel is located in the heart of Old San Juan, ask for a room on the back side for a qu...

“Simple clean hotel in great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

We stayed here for 3 nights prior to our Caribbean cruise. The hotel is small and located above a jewellery store. There is only a small awning on the street to indicate that the hotel is there.

The location is in an excellent area that is convenient to everything, and about dead center in the middle of old San Juan. You can walk everywhere from here.

As other reviewers have said, you initially have to buzz to be let in and there are gates that are locked on each floor in the evening, but we appreciated that this was for the guest's security.

We stayed on the 5th floor and found it quiet for the most part except for one noisy couple coming in at 2 a.m. and slamming doors. Our room was very spacious and had a king size bed, sofa, chair, wet bar area with mini fridge and a decent sized bathroom with the usual amenities. We found the room to be very clean, but not fancy.

Raymond at the reception desk was very personable and always willing to make suggestions about good places to eat, give us information on taxi fares, and immediately attend to an issue we had with the air conditioning in our room. He recommended we eat at Raices and Latin Roots (roast pork at lunch), which were both excellent suggestions. We also ate at the Manolin just around the corner for breakfast and found it was the best and most reasonably priced breakfast we had while in OSJ.

A taxi from the airport to the hotel was about $22 US and a taxi from the hotel to the Pan American Pier to our Celebrity ship was $18 per couple.

If you are looking for fancy, perhaps the Sheraton is for you. For reasonable, budget minded travellers, this fit the bill perfectly.

“Great Location, Nice Staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

This hotel is centrally located in Old San Juan,PR. When you arrive at the front door of the hotel you have to ring the bell to be buzzed in because the door is locked at all times. I was concerned at first like other guests when we arrived at the front door but I think they have it that way so anyone just off the street can't walk into the hotel. They want it to be for guests only, which is a good thing. Great location as long as you don't mind walking. The room & bathroom was nothing fancy but was clean. We stayed here in August 2011 for just one night prior to our cruise but because the pier wasn't within walking distance, we had to take a taxi from the hotel to the Pan American Pier, this is where our ship was docked for Royal Caribbean. The staff was helpful in regards to helping us find places to eat, where to sight see, etc. This hotel is fine to stay in for one night prior to our cruise but if I was going to vacation here a whole week, I would stay somewhere else a little nicer.

“Can't beat the location and staff for the price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Hotel is in the perfect location for exploring downtown San Juan by foot. Parking can be a pain but that would be the case with any place in downtown San Juan. We parked in a parking garage 2 blocks away and it was just over $20 for a couple of days. The hotel is extremely basic but clean. I have read reviews about their strict cancellation policy but they were very flexible with us and actually moved our reservation by a day with no charge to accomodate a cancelled flight. Raymond at the front desk was one of the friendliest and most helpful people we met in Puerto Rico.
