“Can't Wait to Return!”

My husband and I stayed here two nights recently......one on either end of a cruise we took out of San Juan. We had originally booked at another hotel after the cruise, but cancelled after our experience here. All staff were very friendly, no matter what hour of the day or night. Hotel is a block from beautiful beaches, safe location, can walk all around town. This is a European boutique style hotel, so don't expect a Hyatt. (My husband and I hunt these type of hotels out......we love the personal touches, and the fact that everything is not generic.) All rooms have huge balconies that look out onto the stone jacuzzi or beach. We had to stay later than checkout before our cruise, and staff was very laid back about leaving our luggage at the front. They provided us with towels to use at the beach or roof-top deck. The front desk always has a large pitcher of fruit/vegetable infused water, which was delicious. The restaurant is also excellent.....best ceviche I've ever tasted!
One night my husband drank too many mojitos and left his iPad AND iPhone at the restaurant.....both were waiting for him at the front desk the next morning. That's impressive!
One last thing......for those complaining about the slow service, remember this is Puerto Rico! It's not New York City.....people are laid back for a reason, just relax!

“nice hotel, lousy service”

This is a pleasant looking hotel in a good location close to the beach that forgot they are in the service industry. This experience left me with a bad taste in my mouth that would prevent me from using this hotel or their sister hotel "At Wind Chimes Inn," as well. When I called to make the reservation, the phone person "Ed" said I should call back later since they were changing shifts. This sounds more like a lazy clerk than a motivated employee.
I had found the hotel through a website called "purple roofs." They advertised a 10% discount on that website, but when I made my reservation, none of the desk clerks had heard of such a discount. I called and emailed within 24 hours to verify the discount but never heard back from a hotel representative regarding the discount. When we checked in, Chad, the manager said he'd credit our accounts with the 10%, but ultimately came up with a lame excuse not to honor the discount stating our rooms were already discounted (we were booked for new years week and the price we paid ($185 for a king size and $175 for the queen) was higher than the prices listed on the back of the hotel room doors. These were not discounted prices).
Upon arrival, we found that they sold one of our king sized bedrooms to some one else. Instead, they tried to sell us a moldy smelling room with no windows, tucked behind the kitchen. Ultimately, they found a queen sized room that was adequate. Our other room, a king size, had two twin beds tied together. The rooms were pleasant, although quite small. One room didn't have a closet. The balcony furniture was the stackable plastic stuff one buys at KMart.
The wireless network didn't have a strong enough signal to reach the rooms on the second or third floor, so even though they advertise wireless internet, it's not available. On the day we checked in, we had asked about finding a gym to work out at. The desk clerk had no idea where to recommend, but he did find us a gym, on our last night there.
This is a hotel that tries to be a three or four star hotel, but I've had better service at Motel 6. Certainly a disappointment

Room Tip: it doesn't matter since they will probably sell the room you reserved to someone else.

“sunny in san juan”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

landed in san juan for a cruise. this hotel easily accomodates folks in route and those returning from cruise ships. stylistic and understated beach accommodations. The beach in right down the street. awesome staff; contemporary setting, go for the balcony room... no elevators...romantic setting. mounted flat screens and comfortable bedding.

Room Tip: go for balcony rooms

“really disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

After reading so many glowing reviews of this place, I was surprised to find it so disappointing. Typically when a hotel has so many positive reviews on TripAdvisor you're pretty much guaranteed a fantastic stay, but I didn't find that to be the case here.

We spent $185/night for a room with a balcony and partial ocean view, but what we got was a small area between our door and the hot tub with a view of the people in the hot tub. There was no privacy, but our balcony had no chairs to sit on anyway. The staff told us we could take other people's chairs. In fact, our room didn't have a chair either. What it had was two twin beds pushed together, a dresser, a metal rod for hanging clothes and a flat screen tv. The bed is a little short if you're 6'3" (my legs were hanging off the end and this killed my back, although the hot tub straightened it out). Is this worth $185/night? You could probably find something a lot less expensive for these amenities.

The staff was very nice, though the only information we got upon checking in was where the ice machine was. They told me they needed my credit card for incidentals and I thought it was a joke. I don't know what we could have bought. They do have a restaurant where you can buy 30$ pizzas. They are close to a very nice beach, although in December the trade winds are so strong that it seems too cold and rough to swim. Getting to Old San Juan is a $20 taxi ride. Ocean Park and Condado are okay but not nearly as nice as Old San Juan.

This was my 6th time in the Caribbean, my first in Puerto Rico. This was the most money I'd ever spent on accommodations, so I expected it to at least be as good as the places I've stayed in the Dominican Republic, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Lucia and Barbados. In all of those places, I spent less money for a full apartment, ocean view, and private balcony.

Room Tip: Weren't offered a choice of rooms.

“Hospitality thatn chains don't understand.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

We stayed at Acacia in 2009, for one night before our cruise.

We’d been in Florida for a week doing the parks with the rest of our family and needed a night of peace and quiet before we commenced our cruise on our own.

There is no shortage of choice in SJ, but I’m so glad we stayed here. We got a welcome that you just don’t get at a chain and we were directed to our room.

The room itself has everything you need. Ours was on the first floor and looked out towards the beach (which you could see a bit of) with a small balcony, air con, ceiling fan and a charming, unusual bathroom. It’s not going to give you the plushness of a chain hotel, but this is the only sacrifice – everything else is a gain.

In the same block there is a long hot tub, which you can also see part of the beach from. There are also rooms that adjoin the hot tub area, but this would not be my choice.

They we also accommodating enough to offer to look after our bags when we returned from the cruise as we had a few hours between disembarking the ship and our flight back to London via Miami. We didn’t use it as we met some friends on the ship we spent time with at the airport.

A year later we went on a cruise again with our family to get married. We were informed by our airline that our flight time had been moved and there were 8 adults and 2 children with about 5 hours to fill in SJ. I wouldn’t go to San Juan out of choice and needed some rest before the flight – so I immediately emailed the Acacia and explained the problem, the day before.

They were so accommodating as they had a spare room. They hired us a room for the 5 hours, allowed us and the children to use the hot tub and the pool. They also gave us enough towels to each have a shower and freshen up before the hike back to London. That’s what hospitality is all about. Thank you.

As I said before, SJ is not a destination of choice for me – but next time I find myself there, I’ll be checking into Acacia.

Room Tip: There are some rooms that front out straight onto the hot-tub deck.
