I was wringing my hands trying to pick a motel for our Puerto Rico trip. I wanted to stay in the cheapest place possible, but still feel safe, and not have to deal with bugs and dirtiness... (am I setting the bar to low?) I read some reviews before going, and they all seemed horrifying. I picked this hotel, but was worried about it.
I was amazed when we got there how beautifully decorated this hotel was, from the small courtyard full of sculpture and plants (with a tiny pool), to the spacious rooms with exotic wicker furniture... it really set the mood. Because we stayed 9 nights, they gave us a free upgrade to a 6 person suite (we were only 2) with an eat in kitchen... sweet.
The location, in Ocean Park, one neighborhood over from Condado/Isla Verde, the big tourist strip full of glitzy mega hotels, has more locals, but is safe, at least during the day. It's one block walk from the beach, which again, is safe and scenic. We had a rental car, and the hotel is located on the same street/strip that takes you into Condado and eventually, Old San Juan. So really, a very easy location.
The attached vegetarian restaurant is a bit over-priced and not very tasty. They could also stand to work on their front door/security system. Our key to the front door did not work, and so we had to ring the bell very late at night and wait for the front desk person to come let us in. I would have preferred we had a working lobby key.
I am used to staying in the cheapest motels, and this was by far the best. It's around $100 including tax in peak season, and much less during off-peak. The only motels cheaper than that are located far out in the suburbs, cater to "locals" and may not be very safe. I couldn't locate any of them on Orbitz type sites anyhow.
We stored jewelry and valuables in the office safe during part of the stay, and had no problems with theft. The staff was very courteous.
