“Best Decorated BUDGET Hotel we have ever stayed in”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 May 2011

I was wringing my hands trying to pick a motel for our Puerto Rico trip. I wanted to stay in the cheapest place possible, but still feel safe, and not have to deal with bugs and dirtiness... (am I setting the bar to low?) I read some reviews before going, and they all seemed horrifying. I picked this hotel, but was worried about it.

I was amazed when we got there how beautifully decorated this hotel was, from the small courtyard full of sculpture and plants (with a tiny pool), to the spacious rooms with exotic wicker furniture... it really set the mood. Because we stayed 9 nights, they gave us a free upgrade to a 6 person suite (we were only 2) with an eat in kitchen... sweet.

The location, in Ocean Park, one neighborhood over from Condado/Isla Verde, the big tourist strip full of glitzy mega hotels, has more locals, but is safe, at least during the day. It's one block walk from the beach, which again, is safe and scenic. We had a rental car, and the hotel is located on the same street/strip that takes you into Condado and eventually, Old San Juan. So really, a very easy location.

The attached vegetarian restaurant is a bit over-priced and not very tasty. They could also stand to work on their front door/security system. Our key to the front door did not work, and so we had to ring the bell very late at night and wait for the front desk person to come let us in. I would have preferred we had a working lobby key.

I am used to staying in the cheapest motels, and this was by far the best. It's around $100 including tax in peak season, and much less during off-peak. The only motels cheaper than that are located far out in the suburbs, cater to "locals" and may not be very safe. I couldn't locate any of them on Orbitz type sites anyhow.

We stored jewelry and valuables in the office safe during part of the stay, and had no problems with theft. The staff was very courteous.

Room Tip: Free upgrade possible if you stay longer

“STAY AWAY--SHOULD NOT BE ON THE INTERNET FOR PPL 2 BOOK”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 May 2011

My friend and I decided to take a spur of the moment short vacation to San Juan, so we did not want to spend too much money on a hotel as we planned on exploring the town and not really the amneties of a hotel per say, so we did not want to spend too much, however for $79 per night, we were very disappointed. When we arrived we were early and so we were offered the early check in for $30 extra but was told we had to wait until the maid arrived, in the interim, we were directed to a restaurant and they did keep our bags safe until we returned. Upon entering the room, we realized that the A.C. was not working properly and the room was very old and dingy, the sheets however were clean but did have an old and dusty smell to them, which cause me to not be able to sleep for at least one night. The bathroom was small and the space saver was broken and leaning on an angle. There are no elevators in the hotel and so we had to walk up three flights of stairs each time. the room was small and I dare not open the drawers so I cannot tell you what the insides looked like. I travel around the world and this is the first hotel I have ever stayed in where I was afraid to unpack my clothes or even be in the room. The Sunroof, was dirty and dingy and should not even require a sign. The pool was small and dirty and is clearly not for swimming. It was nicely decorated with a waterfall which I am assuming may be the reason for the low to non existent water pressure. Good luck taking a shower if you dare, as my friend and I was afraid to walk in the shower bare feet so we showered with our slppers on each time. The water appears to either be on a timer or cannot be running when more than one guest is showering as for the entire 4 days there, we spent times just standing in the shower all soaped up with no water. When we complained, nothing was done about the situation. The towels were stained but clearly washed, and Good luck getting maid services on the weekend. We had to go to the front desk to ask for toilet paper and towels over the weekend. Our room was only cleaned once, during the entire 4 days that we stayed. This hotel should have no stars and should not even be bookable on an internet website. This really put a damper on our trip and made us very uncomfortable. One night we did not even shower at all because we did not feel like being annoyed by the non existent water pressure. On the bright side, they did fix the air conditioner. I contacted Priceline in order to complain and they were told by the Manager Mr. Palino that the water pressure is low in that area of San Juan (which is a lie) and that he did fix the A.C. so we would not be conpensated at all for our horrible experience. I must say that the staff was very nice, but they really need to close down and invest some money into the place before re-opening. As far as the continental breakfast, it inclused a slice of bread, toasted on one side, coffee or juice, with butter and a fruit. It was a very bad experience and I would never, ever recommend this hotel to anyone, not even if you are staying for one night. Please save yourself the trouble and do not book this hotel.

“Oceana Hostal Playero, A great hotel to stay at.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 March 2011

It was our (my friend and mine) first time in P.R we booked our hotel and was unsure if it would be worth it..... We were so wrong! The staff at Oceana made us feel like family, it's a small Hotel with great service. The night person was great, the food was very tasteful, and the room it's self was comfortable. We are already planning our stay at the Oceana Hostal Playero for 2012. I also recomended the Oceana to my boss, thats how great of a stay we had there.

“The price is right, and that is about it”

The common areas of the hotel look really great, and I booked the room on the basis of seeing them first. Inside the room, these were the problems:
1. The floor was FILTHY - like it hadn't been swept or washed for weeks.
2. Plumbing is dated. The tub had once been green and was painted white, but now the paint is peeling off.
3. The bed is on wheels. When I sit up in bed to read and I lean against the headboard, the bed rolls away from the wall, like an I Love Lucy skit.
4. The employees of the hotel were very friendly and helpful.
