Our eagerly awaited six-day holiday in San Juan was nearly ruined by staying at the Conrad. It wasn't the price (which was allegedly lower than average for the season because of a package deal), nor the poorly designed room (one of those inexplicably stupid design choices that put the closet IN the bathroom), nor even the joke of a beach at the foot of the building. No. It was the appalling way in which we were treated by the staff every single day we were there. I'll only post these two examples so as not to bore the reader: I had made the reservation nearly three months in advance because we needed a crib for our baby daughter and I know these things can be tricky if you fail to ask for one with some anticipation. Morover, I called the hotel the week and then the day before our arrival to ensure we'd have the crib ready for the baby to sleep off the long trip there. We get to the hotel at four in the afternoon and, of course, there's no crib to be found. We waited and called the front desk and then called again and waited some more until, finally, at 8:30pm, we received the ugliest, most jail-cell-like contraption for infants we'd ever seen. A bunch of other annoyingly mundane stuff happened and then came time to check out. After waiting for 45 minutes for the bellboy to arrive at our room I gave up, burdened myself with our luggage and made it to the front desk where my wife was checking us out. A snippet of the conversation with the clerk:
My wife (trying very hard to maintain her composure): We waited 45 minutes for the bellboy to show. What happened?
The clerk (with insulting non-chalance): Yes, do you need help now?
The only salvageable part of the hotel was the valet parking guys: They were very helpful and courteous all around.
A little over two years ago we moved away from San Juan after spending three magical years living there so this trip was supposed to have been magical as well. Thank you Conrad Hotel for making us miss Puerto Rico a little less
Room Tip: Ask for closet OUTSIDE the bathroom
