“I won't stay at Sand Beach Hotel again”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2011

Check In: It took 30 minutes to check in. My Aunt booked the hotel through their website less than 2 hours before I arrived at the hotel. When she reserved it, it seemed as if she paid for it when in actuality she only reserved the room. Once I arrived the clerk said they needed to see my Aunts credit card, I explained to her she was not with me and had already paid for the room. That's when it was explained to me it was not paid for but reserved, and if the credit card is not present I could not check in. In order to take the credit card, my aunt would need to send in a fax with a copy of the front and back of her credit card as well as her driver’s license saying she authorized the payment. I explained she was not near a fax and is there any other way to pay for the room without having to do that maybe book through Travelocity. She said I could. I told them to cancel the current reservation so it could be re-booked through Travelocity. The clerk then explained because I’m rebooking without more than a 24 hours notice they would have to charge me a $79 cancelation fee. I explained to her I just made the original reservation online less than two hours ago, I’m standing right in front of you and I’m rebooking the same room why would you charge me $79. At this point I called my Aunt and passed the phone to the clerk so my Aunt could reason with her. In the end she said she would talk to the manager to see if he would waive the fee. Once that was partially settled, I was booked given and key and went to my room

The Room: Once I entered the room I noticed a smell, but I couldn’t tell where it originated from. I thought maybe the humidity was causing a closed in smell. Once I pulled the sheets back I noticed they looked stained. I pulled the top sheet back and a section was covered in urine, the smell was horrible. It penetrated down to the mattress cover but not the mattress. I don’t see how the maid could have missed the smell or that spot when making up the bed. I called the front desk and asked for new sheets, they immediately brought them up and apologized profusely.

The Restroom: The restroom is very small; the tile could use a good cleaning with bleach to remove dark stains. I also saw what looked like two small baby cockroaches on the toilet.

Cleanliness: The maids did not actually clean the room, I marked my sheets to see if my sheets were changed, they were not. They did not clean the restroom, they only made the bed and replaced the towels. Strangely when I arrived I had only three large bath towels, no wash clothes and when they replaced the towels they only gave me three large bath towels. Luckily I had my own face towel, but I thought it was strange I was not provided one or at least a hand towel.

Wi-Fi: I was told I would have Wi-Fi in my room, it is available, but it did not reach to the second floor. I had to go down to an area directly adjacent to the front desk to surf the net. I also tried getting a signal in the courtyard but I was unable to.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, the stained sheets alone would deter me from ever going back or telling anyone to visit.

Room Tip: Hotel La Conda is around the corner, go there it's nice.

“Clean with great staff”

Stayed 2 nights prior to taking a cruise. Staff went out of their way to make us welcome. We arrived at 11 p.m. and they opened the kitchen for muffins, fruit and tea. The rooms are very clean, no frills but more than adequate. The beach is only a few steps away and lots of eating places close by. A $10 taxi ride will get you in to Old San Juan where the trolley buses are free. Would have no problem staying here again.

“Sandy Beach -- very good choice”

I spent my 1st 2 nights in PR at the Sandy Beach Hotel. The staff was helpful. The location is a short bus ride from Old San Juan and my kids loved the smashing waves on the beach right outside the hotel. Walk one block and you are on the main drag for the Condado section of San Juan. We walked a long distance checking out all the eating options (more to the left but the Subway and Wendys are to the right). Complimentary continental breakfast was an added bonus. The hotel is not a place where you want to spend the day, but as a jumping off point to see Old San Juan or other parts of PR it is great. If you have a rental car you may have a rough time finding parking (I didn't ask). But when I went to get my rental car to go to the awesome Camuy caves, I just parked out front for a few minutes. My 3 kids and I loved our trip and the 2 nights we spent at Sandy Beach were a great start. Now if I could just find that octopus necklace.

“Pleasant stay for the money!”

My fiancee and I booked this hotel online for five nights! Based on the reviews we were not expecting much. However, our experience was nothing like some that were described. Our room was a bit small, but clean and well maintained. The breakfast provided was enough to get you started, and the food was fresh and tasteful. The staff was very helpful in helping us book tours and providing information about the area. The location was great and surrounded with many nice restaurants. I even liked the beach at this hotel. The waters were a little rough compared to other beaches in the area, but more exciting in my opinion. The other beaches were so calm they felt more like lakes. My only complaint would be that we had to ask for towels a few times because the housekeeper forgot to put them in our room. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Sandy Beach Hotel and would definitely stay there again. Although you have to consider the price your paying! Because If your getting a hotel for this reasonable there are some things that would be foolish to complain about.

“Could not have been better”

I am not a big traveler. I came to visit my son who is stationed in the coast guard here. It was just me and my 14 yr old son. I was nervous about vacationing with him. The staff was great they let my older son stay the first night at no charge and even gave us extra towels for the beach. The beach was only 50ft at worst from the hotel and they have a shower outside to
get off the extra salt and sand.
Taxis were outside the hotel at all
times and cost about 15$ to go to
almost anywhere. The breakfast
could have been better with
different choices of fruit and
pastries each day, but overall ok for
free. The location in san Juan is
great but the area food is
expensive. I spent $100 for a lunch
for 3. This is the "rich" district so
staying at a cheap hotel is the ONLY money you will save. If you stay here make sure not to put the housekeeping sign on the door the housekeeper thinks if it's out that no service is wanted so leave it off the door if you want clean sheets and towels.
