First and foremost, the staff bent over backwards for us, and that made our stay much better.
And the location is great: the beach is very nice (though often too windy to use) and Old San Juan is very close.
Still, to avoid you being disappointed, you need to know before you go, that:
1) the hotel is in a sorry state of disrepair:
- both rooms had severely clogged drains
- plaster fell down from the ceiling while we were there
- the shower had hot water only if the sink faucet was on at the same time (!)
- bathroom outlet had no power
- bathroom mirror reflecting surface was rusted throughout
- the fan was set to suck air (winter setting) instead of blowing air (summer setting)
2) Other than the two rooms facing the ocean (#11 and # 12), the rooms are claustrophobically small and face a courtyard with loud air conditioning units going on and off every 45 seconds, day and night (see included picture)
3) The "luminous pool" is actually a tiny, dark cold plunge, squeezed between the reception cubicle and the restaurant tables; it would be rather awkward to go in it, and, in fact, we never saw anyone dare to use it. (see included picture)
4) The restaurant is shockingly expensive. The continental breakfast's emphasis is on sweets (jelly donuts)
5) Yes, the hotel is on the beach, but there is a tall wall in between. You can reach the beach through a door in the wall, until the door is locked in the evening. Not quite what you'd imagine when you think "hotel on the beach".
(I'd accept all this in Mexico for $ 40 a night, but not in PR, and especially not for $ 170 a night.)
As long as you understand the above, then you shouldn't be disappointed by this hotel.
Again, the staff took great care of us, and that made up for everything else.
Also, be aware that the hotel is in a gated community, so you have to pass through a security gate to enter the neighborhood. It's not a problem, but it surprised us. For the same reasons of security, the hotel has no open lobby, but a closed door monitored by cameras that is more reminiscent of a prison's entrance than a hotel. (See included picture) Again, no problem, but just a bit surprising.
Room Tip: Try to get rooms 11 or 12, facing the water. Else, you may be disappointed.
