I recently stayed at the Fortaleza Guest House, it seemed, at first, kind of sparse, not at ALL luxurious but for this solo female traveler it was VERY SAFE and VERY CLEAN. Mind you, the FGH is in a bldg that is over 200 years old, however, I loved my private little room on the 3rd Floor and the sweet shared balcony for guests to use. I always bring flip-flops for the shower (good idea) and ear plugs (ALWAYS gets me a better night's sleep)...but I found the place a great spot to enjoy life like a local in Old San Juan...Tina, the Proprietress and her brother Ricoberto and her dred-lock sporting cooool son Richard CONSTANTLY keep the bathrooms clean as well as the kitchen area for guests to use. This family is so professional and so kind, it's an EASYGOING place, old as can be, but if you're up for a local adventure at a budget-rate price...and if you're not at all expecting anything fancy, this is a safe and wonderfully located place to lay your head. Another added benefit was the fact that many of the people staying there (all nice, clean, polite) end up becoming friends and going out with each other to explore Old San Juan. I left my fancy expectations at the door and enjoyed being part of this wonderfully hard-working and KIND KIND KIND family! Tina even gave me a little gift when I saw her in the gift shop below the guest house. I really miss spending nights and early AM's sitting on the balcony looking over Calle Fortaleza!!!
