“Nice Place - but a few drawbacks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2010

My husband and I actually chose this location to get married in 2007. We got married on the beach right behind the Inn. The wedding was great and the staff made us a nice cake (it was just me and my hubby - no guests). The Inn is cozy and the accommodations are nice. The staff are very nice and go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. However, the Inn is located in a residential neighborhood and close to the road. Our cottage was right next door to someone who played REALLY LOUD MUSIC all night long on our first day there. There was nothing we could do about it because it was a private residence. Also, our cottage was close to the road and you could hear the traffic when trying to sleep. There were political rallies going on at that time and you have no idea how LOUD those are! Up and down the street all night for one whole evening. The beach is pretty but very rocky and you really can't swim here at all. We discussed coming back for our anniversary but will probably not return.

“Couldn't get a response from them!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2008

As of 4/24/08, this place is "closing temporarily for a couple of months" (according to Gladys.) I emailed Gladys a couple of times before I booked online and all seemed on the up and up, but afterwards I never got any kind of anything from her. She kept saying "I'll have Yolanda get back to you" or "I'll talk to her personally," but never got any kind of confirmation or information. It kind of ticked me off, since I had booked online with my cc number.

I finally found another place to stay within the area and emailed Gladys again to cancel. At the same time, she emailed me to cancel my "reservation" because they had to close for a couple of months. According to the place where we ultimately stayed, Sunrise Beach Inn and Spa has gone out of business. I don't know if that is true. I got very little communication from Gladys, none from Yolanda.

Glad we didn't stay there, whether they are open or not!

“not only stirring at sunrise but all day long”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 April 2008

Getting directions from YiYa is essential to finding Sunrise Beach but that is what it made it special for us. It is not a tourist trap, it is quiet, scenic, well maintained; a great spot for a great vacation. Puerto Rico is small enough to make day trips for all the sights. Unfortunately ,we needed more days to see more things. We enjoyed Sunrise Beach to its fullest, from breakfast on the ocean front to a gourmet dinner excellently served by Yiya with a fresh mango sangria all while listening to the surf. We gazed at the skies at night laying in the hammock. What more could you ask for? The staff became friends and we enjoyed visiting with them and hope we can visit them again. We would highly recommend Sunrise Beach to someone that wants a get- away from the rat race. It would help to know a little Spanish as the people in this area speak Spanish and very little English.
Yiya and Toddy are wonderful people and make the stay a special one.

“Awesome Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 February 2008

My boyfriend and I just returned from our 5 night stay at the Sunrise Beach Inn and Spa. This was our first time to Puerto Rico and stayed here based on other tripadvisor reviews. We had a wonderful relaxing time here.

First of all, be prepared for this experience to be a luxury camping trip. The accomodations are great; however there is almost nothing to do within the immediate area unless you plan to drive and travel and search around for the beaches that are often hidden within underdeveloped towns. There are a few restaurants, but we found it cheapest and nicest to buy food at the grocery store for the week and utilize our barbecue grill on our porch every night. Due to the kitchenette and barbecue, fully equipped with tools and charcoal, we were happy as could be. I would highly recommend staying in either Kyoto, Arabian Nights, or India. There have nice patios and barbecues. Arabian Nights and India are beach front, but another guest told me that their bed in India wasn't great. We stayed in Kyoto and had a fine bed.

You can step right out onto the beach from the property. The beach is rocky, and you'll need water shoes to swim; but you will not see anyone else around you for the entire week; it truly feels like a private beach. We brought out lounging chairs everyday to sit out there, and ran out into the water or up to the pool when we got hot. The staff are wonderfully welcoming and kind, helping us whenever we needed it.

A few things to know; there is no tv at all. You'll get three local and fuzzy channels if you are lucky and many rooms had no vcr or dvd player - they have games to play, but I would recommend a deck of cards and lots of books to read. Also, be sure to bring your own toiletries; the showers are beautiful but they provide no shampoo, conditioner, etc. Also, they can make you an excellent meal if you want, but we found it to be overpriced at $28 per person, not including alcohol. It was much cheaper and more fun to cook outside ourselves.

We found the beach towels and pillows to be okay, but had brought two down pillows from home based on previous reviews. We stayed one night in the Bali room, but this had no porch with barbecue and the water in the shower never got warm. We didn't have this issue in Kyoto (which is in the next small building over).

Finally, as this was our first tim to Puerto Rico, travellers should be aware of the local atmosphere, which does not compare to what Sunrise can offer you luxury-wise. Few people spoke English, and the homes were very under-kept. The local beaches were okay, but found that it was best either to hunt around up 901 or just stay at our own beach. The drivers are erratic and don't use turn signals ever... be a careful driver.

This place is great for people who want to get away from everything... you won't see kids running around, and other people will not be in your beach space. You will truly feel like you are on vacation when you go here. We had a great time and hope to return in the future.

“beautiful, peaceful Sunrise Inn and Spa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2008

This is an amazing place. Do not get fooled by the official rating of 2 and 1/2 stars in the official hotel rating. The service, the beauty of the place, the cleanliness, the food and the personal attention were much much higher. It is a true gem and treasure.

Each room is different and special in its own way. All rooms have fully equipped kitchenettes, hammocks to sit on while watching the Caribbean Sea. it is small and intimate and when necessary very flexible. Always very friendly. The beach is glistening and magical. The public areas are beautiful. There are many places to sit and relax and enjoy the beauty.
The pool and jacuzzi are not warmed up. this is the custom in this part of the world. they are not unique.
You can chose to have any or all meal on premises as long as you give the staff time enough to prepare the meals. They are usually very ample, tasty and fresh.
if you are looking for a place to replenish your soul and your energy; fill your eyes with beauty and your heart with kindness this is the place for you. If you are looking for a "happening" scene, with bars and touristy entertainment this is not for you.

You can schedule massages done by an expert physical therapist/massage therapist. Rafael is amazing, gentle, strong and knowledgeable. He will give you the massage any place you want it on the premises. he comes with the massage table and all the rest of the equipment. Nothing like having a massage in the open air, under a shady tree, listening to the sea and the birds. Paradise!

  • Liked — personal attention, beauty of the place, comfort
  • Disliked — you need to bring your computer if you want internet and there is only one place where there is connection, but who needs it when you go on a relaxing vacation
