My boyfriend and I just returned from our 5 night stay at the Sunrise Beach Inn and Spa. This was our first time to Puerto Rico and stayed here based on other tripadvisor reviews. We had a wonderful relaxing time here.
First of all, be prepared for this experience to be a luxury camping trip. The accomodations are great; however there is almost nothing to do within the immediate area unless you plan to drive and travel and search around for the beaches that are often hidden within underdeveloped towns. There are a few restaurants, but we found it cheapest and nicest to buy food at the grocery store for the week and utilize our barbecue grill on our porch every night. Due to the kitchenette and barbecue, fully equipped with tools and charcoal, we were happy as could be. I would highly recommend staying in either Kyoto, Arabian Nights, or India. There have nice patios and barbecues. Arabian Nights and India are beach front, but another guest told me that their bed in India wasn't great. We stayed in Kyoto and had a fine bed.
You can step right out onto the beach from the property. The beach is rocky, and you'll need water shoes to swim; but you will not see anyone else around you for the entire week; it truly feels like a private beach. We brought out lounging chairs everyday to sit out there, and ran out into the water or up to the pool when we got hot. The staff are wonderfully welcoming and kind, helping us whenever we needed it.
A few things to know; there is no tv at all. You'll get three local and fuzzy channels if you are lucky and many rooms had no vcr or dvd player - they have games to play, but I would recommend a deck of cards and lots of books to read. Also, be sure to bring your own toiletries; the showers are beautiful but they provide no shampoo, conditioner, etc. Also, they can make you an excellent meal if you want, but we found it to be overpriced at $28 per person, not including alcohol. It was much cheaper and more fun to cook outside ourselves.
We found the beach towels and pillows to be okay, but had brought two down pillows from home based on previous reviews. We stayed one night in the Bali room, but this had no porch with barbecue and the water in the shower never got warm. We didn't have this issue in Kyoto (which is in the next small building over).
Finally, as this was our first tim to Puerto Rico, travellers should be aware of the local atmosphere, which does not compare to what Sunrise can offer you luxury-wise. Few people spoke English, and the homes were very under-kept. The local beaches were okay, but found that it was best either to hunt around up 901 or just stay at our own beach. The drivers are erratic and don't use turn signals ever... be a careful driver.
This place is great for people who want to get away from everything... you won't see kids running around, and other people will not be in your beach space. You will truly feel like you are on vacation when you go here. We had a great time and hope to return in the future.
