My husband and I stayed at the Gran Bahia from February 3-10th and we had an awesome time. The hotel is beautiful, very clean and well maintained. I would go back again and I would recommend this hotel to any of my friends and family. We didn't want to leave.
Our room was always cleaned daily, once they forgot to restock the towels so I called the front desk and had new ones within minutes. We had a room backing onto the disco so it was a bit noisy at night but we didn't tend to be back in our room before 3am anyways. If you're bothered by noise when you sleep I'd suggest bringing a set of ear plugs just incase you have a similar room. And also, the beds are SUPER comfortable. Atleast in my opinion. I know I had to drag my husband out of bed everyday.
The beach is incredible, it's what seems like a man made lagoon. The water is warm, mostly sandy beach (it gets rocky in a few places), there are always plenty of loungers for everyone. At the far end of the beach there is a beach bar and some decent snorkelling.
The pool is gigantic and there are lots of nice shallow points to just lay in and enjoy your drink while soaking up some sun. The pool must be over a kilometer long so there is plenty of room for everyone to enjoy without feeling like sardines.
The food was fantastic, we weren't crazy about the buffet but were always able to find something that was delicious. My advice is to take a walk around the entire buffet and see what is being served then go and pick up your plate or you may end up taking a whole lot of things you don't want. I had the curry chicken at the buffet one night and it was amazing, I would have eaten that everyday for the rest of the trip.
The al a carte restaraunts are also excellent. We tried the garden grille, don pablo's and mikado. The buffet of appetizers and desserts at the garden grille were awesome, I wish they would have had most of that stuff at the regular buffet every night. I had the surf and turf when we went there and it was VERY good. And if you like pecan pie I think the garden grille has the best pecan pie I've ever had anywhere. Don Pablo's was probably my favourite al a carte. The menu had something for everyone. Mikado, the japanese restaraunt was good but we didn't manage to get a seat at the chefs table where they do the fresh stir fry on the griddle, I heard it was amazing though. So don't worry, you won't be going hungry here.
I only had two complaints, but really more of suggestions that I think would make the resort better. I wouldn't say these affected my trip what so ever, and even if the hotel didn't change them I'd still go back. Everything is served in these TINY plastic cups so bring a portable coffee cup or large bubba keg from home with you so you're not constantly getting out of your seat to get a refill. If you're in the lobby or terrace bar, drinks are served in glassware (which they don't have enough of) until about 10:30-11pm, after that they also change everything over to plastic in order to start their close for the night.
Which brings me to my other complaint, after 11-12pm the bars surrounding the lobby are closed. I've never been to an all inclusive that closed the lobby bar so early. There is a sports bar and a disco that is open so you can still get drinks 24/7 but the atmosphere at the lobby and terrace bars are so much nicer. It would be great if the lobby bar at least could stay open until 2am. Also, there are some instances where the people will greatly out number the staff serving at the lobby and terrace bars so be prepared to grab your own drinks if the wait gets a little too long.
Other than those two minor things my holiday was perfect and I'd go back to the bahia principe in a heart beat. And also Jamaica, I have a feeling all of my all inclusive trips for the next few years will be in Jamaica. The people are wonderful and there are so many fun things to do. Next time we hope to hit up Negril!
