“Good Trip but there is a HUGE SCAM going on. Beware.”
Just got back Jan 15, 2012 from the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean.
Flight- Flying with Transat was GREAT! Hot meal, 2 free wines, good movies on. Fast from Sask to Jamaica. Transfer service people were awesome.
Pros:
Food is excellent! They even have Diabetic/Sugar-free/low Carb choices on the buffet.
Resort is well maintained and cleaned constantly.
Pools are clean and well kept. One is where the activities are/bar/buffet and the other is Adults only with a Bar. (Be prepared for some topless bathing).
Neat activities around resort such as Huge Chess set, Shuffleboard, random hammocks.
Beach is raked nightly and is so pretty.
Snack Shack has GREAT food. Not buffet style but order off a menu.
Ala Cartes are Great!
Certain Rooms are so nice. Others.... see Con Section.
The Jamaican staff ARE AMAZING! From the front desk to the kitchen staff! They are so nice, accommodating, and just all around wonderful.
Location is between Montego and Ochos so its close to Dunns, etc.. in Ochos but yet also close to Montego Bay.
There is a small 'mall" outside the resort for more shopping besides the gift shop. Its nice and handy.
Cons:
There is a BIG scam going on with the resort. It involves the Colombians who own the Decameron and a company called Look Voyages. Look Voyages is based out of France.
Starting in November 2011 there was the first direct flight from France to Jamaica and they took advantage of this and have joined up with Look Voyages to recruit the french. Look Voyages people are bi-lingual and there is about 10 of the Look people around the resort and they are even their own activity team (so there is a Jamaican activity team and French) to assist in getting the non-english speaking people to partake in activities. They are everywhere! So the scam starts with them overselling the resort to about 30% capacity. They even have about 30 Villas (the ones that have a bungalow) which are for the French Only. So when everyone else (not french) gets there to check in they claim there is a "room issue" and if you had booked a Villa- it is no longer available (which we toured after they put us into our rooms and there were lots empty and the maids cleaning them even confirmed non one was in them) and they put you in the courtyard rooms. If those rooms are not available they offer you a "Free" upgrade to their NEW resort. The Royal Decameron Fun Caribbean in Runaway... aka... old Hedonism 3 resort which the Royal has leased. They guarantee you Ocean View rooms, unlimited ala cartes, etc... to over compensate for giving your room away. We booked a Villa and upon check in, fell into this scam. They didnt have one for us, but one will be available in 3 days. Well who wants to move rooms after 3 days? So we ended up in the courtyard rooms by the entrance/gift shop- these are new rooms with large decks, flat screens, new beds (need better pillows!), pull out couch and a nice sized bathroom. So the room wasnt terrible but theyre the farthest from everything and it wasnt what we had booked.(The other older Courtyard rooms are dingy and not nice but are liveable if you get a good deal) I was really mad because I had really wanted a Villa experience so I complained to the Manager- and got offered the Free Upgrade but because we were travelling with friends and our goal was to have our rooms as close as possible... that made NO sense. Instead they offered me and my husband and our two friends (who also didnt receive their villa) a free Dunns River trip. However once we accepted this we were forced to sign a document that freed transat from any liability.... and were encouraged to take this deal because "if you seek compensation from transat.... it may not happen!" so we signed it.
The people we spoke to that took the upgrade then came back when a room was available at the regular Decameron did state that the old Hedo Hotel was awesome, huge and pretty sweet. Apparently it has a waterslide and everything.
It just sucks that theyre purposefully overselling to fill 2 resorts....
Another Con is a lot of the people do not obey the "NO TOPLESS SUNTANNING on the Beach" rule... although there are signs everywhere.
All in all though we had a great trip because the Jamaican people are so amazing! Everyone is fantastic and we will for sure be going back to Jamaica.
Room Tip: Villas or ask for the new Courtyard rooms by the front.
