“"best staff ever"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Just returned from Decameron FUN Caribbean Feb 2 to 9, 2012. I don't know what people are expecting, but to rate this resort a 1 or 2 is just ridiculous! It is rated 3.5 star and could very easily jump up to a 4 star with a few small adjustments.
Ceck In : Arrived approx. 2:00pm. Rooms were ready and front desk staff were warm and welcoming.
Rooms: Rooms were lovely and VERY clean. We already knew that there were no balconies, so no surprises there.
Beach: Small but nice. Lots of umberllas and trees for shade. Staff work hard to keep the beach clean. There are a few stones and seaweed but not that big a deal. There is also a small private beach just to the right of the beach grill.
Food: Beach grill had excellent jerk chicken and pork. The buffet was very nice. As the week progressed, they seemed to add more selections to the buffet. There is plenty of variety. There are 2 a la cartes one Italian, which is very yummy and a Japanese restaurant where your food is cooked in front of you. Lots of fun and dinner was great.
Entertainment: The night entertainment was usually a live band with singers. They did a good job including the guests when dancing etc. The recreation staff are wonderful. THey work very hard to involve the guest in their games, etc. There is a great water slide for the kids or adults. It is superivsed by lifeguards whenever it is running. The staff will sit and chat with you and will do anything to make your vacation fun! The restaurant and bar staff are also very warm and friendly. Even when they are very busy serving guests, they still have a smiling face.
I could not ask for a nicer bunch of servers and Recreation staff. The Management were very helpful if you had any concerns and worked quickly to resolve them.
I noticed some DeCameron Representantives there checking on the operations of the resort. My only advise to them is to back off on the dining room staff. They know what they are doing.
Considering that this resort has only been re opened for 4 weeks, they are doing a great job.
In my opinion, you will NOT find a better vacation in Jamaica for this price.
Great job to the DeCameron FUN Caribbean staff for making our staying even better.
I would return to this resort.

“Up and Coming”

Hubby and I stayed Jan 30-Feb 6 at Royal DeCameron Fun Caribbean. I was leary at first because there was no reviews on Trip Advisor which made me believe there was only one Royal DeCameron in Runaway Bay. As it's only been open (under this management group) for a month, I can understand why I couldn't find anything before

It's a smaller resort so it wasn't a challenge finding everything but it's large enough to find privacy on grounds if you wish.
They were painting while we were there and I'm sure that there will be continuous improvements.

Rooms - could use some updating
but the bed was comfortable. The mirrors are still there from the old Hedonism days. The water temperature in the shower fluctuates drastically, at times. Big windows that open. It is a basic room, no frig or coffeemaker, and it's clean.

Recreation - outside of the 3 pools, there is a gym, ping pong, pool tables, basketball, canoes, paddle boats, water slide, tennis court (pro incl), beach volleyball, bocce ball, snorkel, life-size chess board. We aren't late night people so didn't manage to get to the disco.

Lounge chairs in this resort are plentiful and you don't need to worry about trying to save one

Food - Buffet: you won't go hungry but it isn't a 5 star yet. I have a seafood allergy so I'm always concerned but had no problem. It seemed to cool off quickly in the buffet. Best soups in any of the AI's I've been to. A La Cartes -Limited selection at the Italian and we didn't go to the Japanese (allergy concern again) but heard it was enjoyable. The Grill on the beach had your burgers and Jerk which was good. Nothing available between 5PM and 6:30 though which was a concern for hubby.

Staff - Every one of them is attentive and seem to enjoy their roles in making your vacation a great experience. The Entertainment Group did a great job at keeping up the tempo all day and evening. They would all take the time to say hi and chat, from the bartenders to the lifeguards and the gardeners and I can't forget the cleaning staff.

Good People, Food and Clean Fun....Everything IRIE!!

Thanks for the memories.
I

Room Tip: these are 3 story walk up buildings...we were in the 700 building. Not right by the pool or disco s...

The hotel is nice. The employees too. However, we did not like the beach area. Beach is very very very small. I spent most of the time in the hot tub. Food is great. They change the menu around every day. Don't bother making reservations for a la carte. Food there is not good.

“24 hr opinion”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

Due to overbooking at our original hotel we were placed here for 24hrs from 26 to the 27 January 2012

In all honesty we were probably not here long enough to gain a true opinion of the hotel which had only just been taken over by the Decameron group. I did however feel it warranted a review.

As the hotel had only recently been taken over it was still in the process of being cleaned, the pools were unusable as we're the jacuzzi's our stroll around the ground showed that it was open, in part.

The rooms were not to my liking in part because of the high mirror content around the bed and a mirror on the ceiling above the bed and also due to the dated feel including bathroom. We viewed a few rooms, all are of reasonable size, including either 2 arm chairs + table, or sofa, bed, dressing area, safe. The bathrooms are again a reasonable size with wc, basin and jacuzzi bath +mirror over bath. The bath was not suitable for anyone with mobility issues as you need to climb up a step and then climb into a sloped bath.

The hotel had a well equipped gym, beach cove, lots of swimming pool area, 2 or 3 swim up bars, pool table, table tennis, one buffet restaurant and 2 a la cartes, one japanese, one Italian.

We had two meals in the buffet restaurant and couldn't fault the food (the fried dumplings are to die for). The staff were either starting that day or had started the day before, they were attentive, friendly and seeming genuinely happy.

I suspect that with a good clean(which was taking place), so refurb in the rooms and customers in the door this could well become a wonderful hotel.

“Great Time in Runaway Bay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

Just returned from a week at the ROYAL DECAMERON FUN CARIBBEAN in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. This property was formerly a Hedonism II back in its day and then became part of the Breezes family before joining the Royal Decameron group. Apparently it had been closed for a while for the takeover, and has only been open 1 month – there were still a few opening hiccups but on the whole a wonderful experience.

The property still shows signs of its Hedonism life (in the ceramic room numbers, mirrors over the beds and bathtubs) and we thought that maybe the spirit of hedonism was still alive in some of the entertainment provided and the actions of the guests. The entertainment staff were amazing – you never knew what was going to happen from day to day, but they kept it lively. There was a daily contest on the water slide (who knew water slides were so much fun!), afternoon games and guest participation evening shows. The staff had amazing dance moves and we thought that they were even better than the dance troupe that came in a couple of different evenings. Shout outs to Mr. Whacky, Kim, Spice and all the others. Only complaint is that the music is too loud – especially at night. It is impossible to hear what is being said by the people on stage – they have the volume up so loud and the MC practically yells into the microphone so you can’t understand anything being said. I spoke to the MC about it but nothing was every done about it. I participated in one of the evening events and was up on stage but couldn’t even understand what was being said because it was so loud.

When we booked this property we were concerned about what the meals were going to be like – especially since there had been no reviews available to depend on. The meals far exceeded our expectations – there was always plenty of choice and variety available on the buffet for every meal and the freshness was only exceeded by the quality. The desserts at the buffet were wonderful – especially the home made cookies. The a la carte restaurants were just as wonderful. We ate at the Japanese restaurant one night and it was great – the staff really added to the experience – and ate at the Italian restaurant twice. The menu at the Italian restaurant changes daily so it was great to try different dishes. In addition to the buffet and a la carte restaurants, don’t forget to try the grill. It is wonderful to sit by the water and chow down on some awesome food. Sasha will be sure to get you just what you want and however you want it. The grill is open for lunch and then closes for a while, but reopens at 11 PM for a midnight snack.

A free shuttle is provided to the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean where you can go for dinner. We went over twice – once for the seafood and the second time for Thai. Neither meal was very memorable and we found the atmosphere was not as friendly as our property. We were happy to get back to the Fun Caribbean.

The bars – what can we say! Noreen (at the main bar) made sure that we always had a drink in hand. Ask for one of her specials! The day wasn’t complete without a visit to Joel’s swim up bar – over in the courtyard surrounded by the green, yellow, orange and red buildings. Joel closes at 5:00 PM and just before he packs up for the day he makes up a “little something, something” shooter for everyone at the bar and in the hot tub. He created a really tasty special for my birthday – it was yummy! In addition to these 2 bars you can get a drink at the grill and there is another swim up bar down towards the second beach.

The room was okay – definitely not a 5* but comfortable. As I said before, once you got over the mirror over the bed and bathtub is was just a basic room. There was no fridge, the windows all opened, but there was no balcony. Don’t forget to bring your shampoo and facial tissue (neither were provided in our room) – all that was left was small hotel size bar soap. We paid extra for an oceanfront room, but it was next to the waterfront grill (which opened at 11 PM and closed at 2:00 AM) so we had to keep our windows closed. There were no balconies on any of the rooms, although the ground floor rooms did have walk-outs but no lawn furniture available. The maid service was great and the towel art unbelievable.

The beach wasn’t the largest we have ever been to and there were a few rocky spots, but it was in a bay and not too wavy. There could have been more palapas to provide shade but it was great to have bar service provided right to your beach chair.

Don’t forget to get your safety deposit box code before you leave the Front Desk on check-in. They don’t offer it to you and it will be another trip to the desk if you leave without it. There was only 1 hot tub working while we were there and lots of painters around freshening up the place, but the lack of interaction by the management was obvious. We did see what appeared to be a corporate type health and safety guy almost every day (communicating only with staff and avoiding guests) but the Hotel Manager or Food & Beverage Manager were not to be seen. In a start-up situation it is important for the hotel management to be seen, involved and visible to guests. Because of this lack of involvement by management, we give this hotel an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10.

We felt that we got good value for our money and would recommend this property to anyone who is not looking for a 5* resort but wants a good time, good food and fun.
