“Strange place”

The hotel reminded me of a pretentious golf course in North Carolina or a mega-funeral home. The common areas, hallways and rooms are mainly in good taste, sometimes very charming - like the tropical bird caged in an atrium. The outdoor patio is huge and the chess board pattern creates a bizarre and disturbing feeling that could trigger an epileptic seizure. It called to mind the old TV series "The Prisoner" (with Patrick McCowan (sp?) as the character known as number 6).

“Almost perfect getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2006

The hotel is not your usual tourist resort. This is where you go if you want to get away from tourist hustle and enjoy privacy in beautifully landscaped grounds. Very nice owners and managers. Good value. Food was okay; dinner service was below par (red or white wine?). Loved the place until my mobile phone was stolen from the room. Had to leave early. What a shame. Still thinking about staying here again.

“Hidden Treasure”

The hotel was beautiful. Although it was not our first choice, we were happy.
The staff that greated us was very helpful. I called many times before arriving to confirm various details and they were always helpful. I suggest speaking with Lorna at the front desk.
I also suggest including breakfast with your room as their breakfast can be a bit pricey. Although the hotel was booked, we always felt as if we had the entire place to ourselves. The hotel staff was always helpful, but in Jamaica- always be prepared to wait. I suggest taking a cab away from town towards the blue lagoon or Boston Jerk (great chicken- try the chicken sausage).
Very important to bring your own shampoo/ conditioner/ soap/ lotion and towels. The water never really went above very warm and to get this, the shower should be turned on for about 10 minutes. However, the maids make the most creative animals and things with the towels- accented with flowers.
Great hotel for those who want to do a whole lot of nothing. Even in December/ January, you can get a great tan/ sun burn. Even if it rains, it only lasts for about 20 minutes.

“Absolutely Fabulous”

As a couple who have travelled the world, stayed in many five star chain hotels (most of them paid for by some-else), we are very spoilt. When we pay for a hotel ourselves we expect both value for money and high standards. We found both at the Jamaica Palace, along with friendly staff, beautiful relaxing grounds, lovely art work adorning the walls (most for sale) and a range of hotel pets (caged birds and cats wandering the grounds). The rooms are a great size and decorated nicely. The only areas where the hotel was lacking were---warm (not hot) water for showers, no bottled water at the restaurant/bar, and very basic hotel toiletries (we were fine as we brought our own shampoo, etc). A fanatasic relaxing location with lovely beaches and waterfalls nearby. If you are driving up from Kingston would advise the A3 north, then A4 east; coast road via East coast takes 1 hour longer. Found driving felt safer than in South Africa, but road are in quite bad condition---go by driving times on Jamaican tourist board web site; not mileages!

“Best kept secret in Jamaica”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2004

The Jamaica Palace Hotel was absolutely charming and provided a perfect balance between experiencing the Jamaican culture and being on a resort. While at the hotel we drove to Boston Beach, Port Antonio, the market, Frenchman's Cove, Trident Castle, Blue Lagoon and San San Beach with in 10-15 minutes. We also visited Non-such Caves, Reich Falls and went Rafting on the Rio Grande, the latter are located about 35-45 minutes from the hotel. The best thing about being in Portland is that we DID NOT have people coming up to us every five minutes asking to braid our hair or buy something and the fact that it was just great to relax or party when we wanted to. The food was excellent and the service was first class, the hotel had a unique ability to grant requests that go above and beyond what we had expected in the accommodation and meal package. The service is excellent and Lorna, Bobby and Wolfard were able to customize the meals, provide short cuts and maps to desired destinations and accommodate various other requests. While at the Jamaican Palace we stayed in the Junior B Suite located on the second floor which had a great view of the grounds and a partial view of the ocean. The room was very clean, fresh and spacious. In addition, they have satellite television and access to the internet upon request. The grounds are impeccable and lush, they are situated next to a tropical forest which provides a very tropical and secluded feeling. The grounds are so large that you feel a sence of seclusion. We will definitely go back. P.S. this hotel is closer to the Kingston Airport June 20/04
