We stayed one night at Fern Hill hotel in November. I was looking forward to trying a new place in Portland, Jamaica, unfortunately, it did not work out for us.

The positives:
-Room was very clean
-View from the restaurant was spectacular
-The continental breakfast was quite tasty.

The negatives:
-The bathroom that you'd use while in the lobby or the restaurant smelled like sewage backed up in it, not just once, but in all three uses of it on two separate days.
-The view from the room was ruined because first you had to look over how dirty the property was, and it was extremely dirty.
-The towels were like rags. I don't mind a "tired" room as long as it's clean, but give me decent towels please.


I can see that it once was a spectacular place, and I really hope that it gets up to par again, but for now, I won't be going back.

My husband and I loved this Place. We are active, independent travelers. We rented a car and traveled through Jamaica. This was our favorite location! We liked it so much, that we stayed 2 extra nights. You are in the rain forest! A short walk down the hill (< mile) and you are at the most beautiful beach in Jamaica (Frenchman's Cove). True, the complex, grand and beautiful in his days, has not ben recently updated. However, we actually liked the lost in time feel of the place; The lush wild vegetation, the myriads of birds and flowers! For us this is paradise. If you are looking for a manicured, all-confort, all-inclusive type place, this is not for you. Our room was clean and VERY large, actually an apartment with living room and large porch. I admit a bit outdated, but a great value, considering the location and the price. The restaurant has a magnificent view. We loved the jamaican breakfast: kallaloo, ackee, green baby bananas, yams, etc..! The staff is very friendly and helpful.

The grounds are absolutely lush, it takes your breathe away and the villas are perfectly designed.
The front desk staff at the resort are very friendly and helpful.

In each villa not only are the bedrooms large, the bathrooms are also amazingly spacious.

Fern HIll overall needs some TLC. So much potential, I wish the owners would hire cheap labour and together do all the little jobs to make the Resort into what it should be!

Stayed with my husband for one night- only because we were on a tour of the island and was constantly on the move; would have stayed longer if we had more time for Portland. I must say the drive up is a bit lonesome, however, once there you forget that and give in to the exceptional view overlooking the sea.

The staff we interracted with (especially Mary) was pleasant and helpful. The room was nice and clean for the price. The complimentary breakfast was excellent; eggs, toast, plantain, breadfruit, banana bread, tea, juice, and fruits. More than we expected from what is termed 'continental' breakfast.

i would recommend it to anyone looking for a budget holiday.
