We (couple in 50's) stayed in February 2012 and loved it - would definitely come back to Negril and stay at Mom's again. It's funny reading the other reviews and agreeing with bits of all of them (+ and -), it's just that the + parts were so good, that the -'s didn't seem to matter so much.
Room was basic but perfect - we were hardly ever in it other than sleep and shower - bed was OK, room to put clothes, towels, functioning shower, ceiling fan and air-con, which we didn't use - why go to Ja from the UK and make it cold????). Sand does get into the room from our feet, but only takes moments to sweep out and the bedding was changed regularly. Our chalet was closest to the beach, on the sand, 50 yards from the sea (with the bar/restaurant on the way for emergencies!), veranda to chill on when it got too hot, sun-loungers available.
Location was absolutely brilliant - easy walk to town on the beach one way, easy walk on the beach to the rest of the bars, resorts, music 'venues', vendors, etc., the other way. You're 2 minutes from the road (which you won't hear) with local shops, nearby ATM, restaurants, and (scary) taxis every second if you need to go out of town or up to the cliffs. For the 'doers' there are plenty of opportunities on your doorstep - Alvin's Glass Bottom Boat tours to the reef for snorkelling or to Rick's Cafe from the sea are great and he moors up outside Mom's. Every morning, we'd wander a few yards to have our morning coffee as the sea lapped our toes - perfect.
Food was fine and a lots of variety. You can eat at Mom's and you've so many other bars/restaurants within a few minutes walk. Don't avoid places because of the way they look, either. Remember, though - this is Jamaica and you have to wait!. There are also snack sellers who parade up and down the beach so you will not go hungry.
Value for money? Well for us from the UK, yes it was. Jamaica isn't especially cheap, but neither did it seem exorbitant so I guess it depends on what you expect. Maybe some of the other feedback reflects that. Mom's certainly seemed value for money to us and we're really looking forward to going back.
Finally, the people at Mom's were fabulous - Caesar and 'Mom', thank you so much for your hospitality, company and and help, many thanks Myers for taxi and tour guide services(!!) and please pass on our thanks to all your staff (especially Sonnica for the flaming Bob Marleys' - beware!). While we were there, there were also lots of returning visitors to Mom's (probably the best recommendation) who were really helpful in the initial acclimatisation and pointing out what's worth doing/avoiding - many thanks especially Lanny and Gayle, if you're reading this.
We had the room nearest the beach and next to the bar/restaurant - you could hear the sea gently lap...
